    Over 1,000 hiring managers told ResumeTemplates what skills they think will matter most in 2026, and it’s not what many people assume. Here’s the breakdown: • 62 percent say hard and soft skills hold equal weight • 24 percent say soft skills matter more • 14 percent say hard skills do That tracks with what I’ve seen over the years, but this survey surfaced a few shifts worth paying attention to. Hard skills first. AI finally made the list, but it’s still at the bottom. People talk about AI nonstop, but hiring managers continue to prioritize the skills that get work done every day. Top hard skills for 2026: • Software tools • Data analysis • Cybersecurity awareness • Project management Cybersecurity ranking third surprised me. It’s an overlooked area of skill development, yet the expectation is growing. You don’t need to be an expert, but you do need enough awareness to avoid mistakes that put the company at risk. Soft skills tell another story. Communication landed at number one. No surprise there. Understanding your own communication style and recognizing others’ gives you an advantage in almost every workplace situation.   • The latest BLS jobs report shows a labor market that’s still growing but moving at a slower pace than earlier this year. Payrolls increased by 119,000 jobs in September. We’ve been seeing small month-to-month gains since spring, but nothing close to the stronger growth we had in the first quarter. The unemployment rate held at 4.4 percent, up from 4.1 percent a year ago. That shift reflects a market that’s cooled. More people are looking for work and employers are hiring more cautiously. You’ll see the same pattern in the industry data. Growth continues in 📈 health care 📈 food services 📈 social assistance Job losses continue in 📉 transportation and warehousing 📉 courier and messenger services 📉 parts of the federal government Wage growth remains steady. Average hourly earnings rose to $36.67, up 3.8 percent over the past year, which aligns with the pace we’ve seen since spring.
