From the very start, Krista made me feel reassured and cared for. She has this calm confidence that instantly puts you at ease, and it’s clear she really knows her stuff. She always took the time to explain what was happening, answer all my questions, and make sure I felt comfortable and informed. What meant the most to me was how she balanced her medical expertise with genuine compassion. She checked in on how I was doing emotionally, not just physically, and gave me the encouragement I needed on the tough days. I never felt like “just another patient” with her; she made me feel like I mattered. Going through chemo isn’t easy, but having Krista there made such a difference. We’re excited to celebrate Shanin Gervais, RN, from our Sky Ridge clinic, who has been honored as a 2025 DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses recipient! A patient recently shared how Shanin’s compassion and steady presence guided them through one of the most difficult moments of their life: 💬 “The day was my packet care appointment, and I had just been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in three organs. Not only did Nurse Shanin take her time explaining and sharing what steps were to take place, Shanin kept repeating we (I) am here for you. Her passion for human care was seen during some dark days for me. She is a light and gave myself and my wife hope. Shanin is an example of kindness and respect, which we need in today's healthcare. I have had a multiple situations where I needed information immediately to proceed to book other appointments for my treatments and well-being. With leaving messages, through answering service, I always got a call professional call back from Shanin. It’s the small things that matter. Nurse Shanin, thank you for making me matter. I never felt alone. Your words and even a hello if I wasn’t seen by you that particular appointment made a difference. Nurse Shanin is a GEM!” Shanin’s dedication, kindness, and unwavering support exemplify the extraordinary care we strive to provide at RMCC. We are grateful for the difference she makes every day.

The discussion highlights the importance of community–academic collaboration, data-driven care, and expanding access to advanced treatments across diverse patient populations. We’re proud to highlight expert insights from our President and Medical Oncologist, Dr. Manoj Bupathi, who recently joined Dr. Benjamin Garmezy, Associate Director, Genitourinary Cancer Research, Sarah Cannon Research Institute and medical oncologist at SCRI Oncology Partners, in a conversation with The Educated Patient to discuss prostate cancer awareness and the importance of early screening. Their discussion sheds light on why prostate cancer can appear earlier and more aggressively in Black men and why diversity in clinical research is key to improving outcomes for all patients. A patient shared a heartfelt memory of Trisha’s compassionate care during their first treatment: 💬 “Trisha was my first nurse for whom I received my first treatment. Trisha was friendly, kind, compassionate, settled me down, made me as comfortable as possible to be there watching, to be sure it was as easy as pie! One of her secrets was talking about herself, guiding me to an easy fulfilling, painless injection treatment that I could ask for! I will always remember how Trisha made me smile, helping me to forget why I was even here! Thank you Trisha, may god bless you, all the nurses, doctors, staff, and maintenance people here who make our lives a better place to be!” Trisha’s dedication to easing her patients’ fears and making every moment better is a testament to her exceptional compassion and care. We appreciate all she does for our patients!

We’re proud to share that Dr. Browning and Dr. Busby recently represented RMCC and The US Oncology Network at the annual Surgeon and PAC Board Fly-In in Washington, D.C. During the event, they met with key policymakers — including U.S. Congressman Morgan Griffith, Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health — to discuss critical issues in cancer care, including federal agency reform and legislation to improve patient access to medications. Together with oncology leaders from across the country, they helped elevate the voice of independent community oncology and advocated for the patients we serve every day. Thank you to Dr. Browning and Dr. Busby for your leadership and commitment to ensuring that the future of cancer care is driven by compassion, access, and innovation.

We’re honored to share that Betsy Cabrera, RN, from our Centennial clinic, has been nominated for the 2025 DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses—her third nomination! A longtime patient expressed their deep gratitude for Betsy’s care and dedication: 💬 “Betsy has been treating me for MDS since 2017. She always answers my questions in a manner I can understand and there has been a lot of questions. When I walk into the treatment center she always welcomes me with a warm smile and a comforting demeanor. Betsy just makes me feel better before I leave. I have noticed that she treats everyone with that same care. If something isn't quite right with my meds or schedule she will get to the bottom of it and get it corrected before I leave. I just want to thank her for always going the extra mile for me. Betsy has always been a ray of sunshine in my darkest moments and I want to thank her with all my heart.” Betsy’s commitment to going the extra mile exemplifies the compassion and professionalism that defines RMCC nursing. One longtime patient shared how Katrina changed the course of their care: 💬 “I’ve been an RMCC patient for over 15 years. Katrina found me in the data and identified me as a candidate for a clinical trail. She explained the medication and possible side affects and benefits in detail and with care and compassion. After lots of screenings, I was approved for the trial. This has given me a new hope for healing and remission. Katrina is always available to answer questions and advocate for me. She is a blessing!” From thoughtful education to ongoing support, Katrina embodies what it means to advocate for patients. We’re grateful for the difference she makes every day.
