SPD provides public safety services to everyone who visits, lives and works in the city of Seattle

About us

The Seattle Police Department is a large metropolitan public safety agency in Washington state with nearly 1,100 sworn officers. We receive over 800,000 911 calls annually in a city of 84 square miles. We have more specialty units than any other department in the state, including: traffic, harbor, mounted patrol, major crimes, property crimes, crisis response, SWAT, arson and bombs, K9, collaborative (community) policing, forensics, training and community response. On a daily basis, our officers are asked to do a little bit of everything - from investigating and solving crimes; to patrolling our waterways, parks and city streets; to keeping everyone safe during sporting events and parades; to connecting our city's most vulnerable residents with much-needed services. The mission of the Seattle Police Department is to prevent crime, enforce the law, and support quality public safety by delivering respectful, professional and dependable police services. • In honor of Women’s History month, we’re dusting off these “throwback” photos from our archives.    From parking enforcement officers on roller skates, to patrol and community engagement officers in the 1980s; to trailblazer Asst. Chief Noreen Skagen, who during her 30 years at SPD made a tremendous and lasting impact on the department; to our 1965 “Women’s Division,” we are so proud of these incredible people who have served our community.

  • We’d like to kick off Women’s History Month by featuring Deputy Chief Yvonne Underwood. Since starting her career at SPD in 1997, Deputy Chief Underwood has worked in Patrol, Field Training, OPA, Domestic Violence Unit, Force Investigations, and has led the Professional Standards Bureau as an Assistant Chief. Deputy Chief Underwood holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice Studies from Ohio State University. We asked Deputy Chief Underwood to share a little more about her career and her life outside of work, here’s what she said:   “Working for SPD is humbling, challenging and incredibly rewarding. I am proud to be a part of this organization, and even more so seeing the incoming Officers just beginning their careers with an excitement and commitment to helping people in their communities.   Outside of my law enforcement career, I enjoy spending time with my boyfriend and dog, Kodak. I love to golf and travel or catch up with my 2 sons, ages 20 and 25.”

I was incredibly honored to join forces with Seattle Police Department, Walmart, Umatilla County Sheriff, King County Sheriff's Office, Washington State Patrol and the Lacey Police Department, for a mission that truly touches the heart. Together, we delivered food and toys Seattle Children's Hospital and Ronald McDonald House Charities. Walking into those spaces and seeing the incredible resilience of children battling cancer and challenging medical conditions was profoundly humbling. Even with Santa by our side, watching these brave kids light up when they saw our uniforms was a moment I'll never forget. These are the moments that transform a job into a calling. Being able to bring a moment of joy, hope, and wonder to children facing unimaginable challenges – there's no greater privilege. The Umatilla County Sheriff (From NE Oregon) hosts this toy drive, each year, in support of Detective Mike Ellwood’s daughter, Jasmine, who was diagnosed with bone cancer at 15 years old. The support and reach grows every year, with both Oregon and Washington children’s hospitals, Ronald McDonald House Charities, local pediatric centers, and community partners housing families fighting similar battles, during their time of need. Grateful to serve, grateful to make a difference. 🚔❤️🎄 #CommunityService #HolidaySpirit #LawEnforcement #Giving #jasminestrong
