Hunger may be closer than you think – a neighbor, a coworker, a classmate. Behind closed doors, too many people are struggling to keep their cupboards full. DYK that food insecurity in Silicon Valley is higher than the national average? In a recent Second Harvest survey, the majority of neighbors served reported at least one person in their household is working – but nearly 60% of those employed households can’t cover their monthly expenses. At Second Harvest, we have always been there for our neighbors during times of crisis, and we are not going anywhere now. But we cannot do this work alone. This #NationalFoodBankDay, we urge you take action and help ensure that we can continue providing a crucial lifeline to our neighbors struggling to put food on the table. This month, just $1 helps provide enough food for 4 meals. Together, we can help ensure all our neighbors have access to nutritious food.

Second Harvest's mission is to end hunger in our community.
About us
Founded in 1974, Second Harvest of Silicon Valley is one of the largest food banks in the nation and a trusted nonprofit leader in ending local hunger. The organization distributes nutritious groceries through a network of nearly 400 partners at drive-thru and walk-up sites across Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. Due to the prohibitively expensive cost of living in Silicon Valley, the economic downturn caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the rise in inflation, Second Harvest is now serving an average of about 500,000 people every month. Second Harvest also connects people to federal nutrition programs and other food resources, and advocates for anti-hunger policies on the local, state and national levels. 🚧 Big news: We’ve broken ground on our new warehouse! 🚧 Right now, 1 in 6 of our Silicon Valley neighbors relies on Second Harvest for nutritious food. But our current facilities can’t keep up with the near-record demand. This new space will change that – it will: 🥕 Expand cold storage so we can distribute even more fresh, healthy food 🤝 Welcome larger volunteer groups to power our mission 🛠️ Unify our operations so we can work more efficiently 🦺 Ensure we’re ready for future emergencies “This new home will be the heart of our work — where food, staff, volunteers and hope come together for our community,” shares Leslie Bacho, CEO of Second Harvest of Silicon Valley. “It will allow us to serve more families with dignity today, while also giving us the capacity to prepare for tomorrow. We've always known hunger is a challenge we can solve when we work together, and this milestone shows what’s possible when our community unites to ensure we all have the nutritious food we need to thrive.” This facility represents more than a building – it’s hope, opportunity and a healthier future for everyone in our community. Thank you for standing with us on this journey.

We recently met Hector while he was volunteering at the Daly City Partnership food distribution. He's hard to miss, rocking a long beard and sunglasses — we could have mistaken him for a famous musician. And it turns out he's quite the rockstar...volunteer! Hector caught our attention as he passed out donated children's books to kids waiting with their parents in line. “I got a side job,” he laughed. “I try to give books out. Otherwise, they stay on their little devices!” At 75 years young, Hector says volunteering helps get him out and about: “Otherwise, I’d be Mr. Couch Potato. I don’t want that, so I'd better keep active.” We’re so grateful for volunteers like Hector, who bring incredible kindness, warmth and a little extra joy to our community. 💙 #FeedingSiliconValley

It takes a community to ensure everyone has the nourishment they need, especially during life’s most difficult moments. That’s why we’re so grateful for our network of partners and their unwavering commitment to giving back. Recently, hundreds of LinkedIn employees came together to support families served by Ronald McDonald House Charities, one of our valued nonprofit partners. Their compassion and teamwork helped provide comfort and care to parents staying by their child's side during medical treatment. As Laura Keegan Boudreau, CEO of Ronald McDonald House Charities Bay Area, shared: “We're grateful for LinkedIn and our partnership with Second Harvest of Silicon Valley for providing support to families with sick children so they can focus on what matters most: the health of their child.” We are proud to stand alongside LinkedIn and partners like RMHC to create a stronger, more connected community where every family is supported.

DYK that every year, nearly 40% of food produced for people to eat in the U.S. goes to waste? This is why Second Harvest's grocery rescue program focuses on recovering healthy food from local retail and grocery stores, including meat, dairy, shelf-stable items, and more. With one of San Mateo County’s largest grocery rescue pantries, Daly City Partnership serves up to 1,400 clients each month through free grocery distributions, emergency pantry services and home delivery to seniors and individuals facing mobility issues. Like many of the programs we are proud to partner with, Daly City Partnership is powered by dedicated volunteers who unload, sort and distribute food each week. Some volunteers are recipients themselves, creating a full-circle model of dignity, compassion and community support. Daly City Partnership also goes above and beyond by offering safety-net services such as their clothing closet, school backpack program and housing support. We are so grateful for this partnership and the many ways our network of nearly 400 partners at 900+ sites helps nourish our community and ensure a healthy future for all.

Our MVP crew (Marketing, Volunteer Engagement and Philanthropy) celebrated the close of a successful fiscal year at San Jose’s Emma Prusch Farm Park. It was the perfect setting to pause, reflect and celebrate the heart and hustle this team brings every single day. Huge thank you to the incredible @Veggielution staff — Shawn Gerth, Claudia Damiani Fontana and Fernando Fernandez Leiva — for a warm welcome and educational tour of their vibrant community farm. From rallying volunteers to engaging donors in new and meaningful ways, our MVPs are behind so many of the moments that make it possible to nourish nearly 500,000 neighbors each month. Their creativity, dedication and teamwork not only fuel our programs, they fuel hope. We couldn't meet the growing need in our community each year without an incredible network of donors, volunteers and supporters. Here’s to the people who turn compassion into action and keep our mission blooming year-round. 🧡

Martha Carpenter made her first donation to Second Harvest in 1991 after seeing a simple, powerful message: “This amount will feed a family for a month.” That clarity — and the local impact — moved her to act. When it came time to consider her plans, Martha recognized the importance of maximizing her contributions, and she wanted to make sure that she could support a cause that was close to home — which is how she decided include Second Harvest in her will. "It was something I could kind of touch and feel and get involved in,” she said. “And food is just about the most basic thing you can give.” This #MakeAWillMonth, we celebrate and honor legacy donors like Martha who help ensure we can continue providing nutritious food to anyone who needs it for generations to come. 🧡

Potatoes may be humble, but they’re one of the most versatile and valuable staples we provide at Second Harvest. Not only do they have a long shelf life, making them a reliable pantry item, but they’re also packed with nutrients like vitamin C, potassium and fiber. From mashed to roasted, soups to stir-fries, potatoes stretch into countless meals that bring comfort and nourishment to the table. They’re one of the most accessible ingredients, used in many delicious and filling ways across households and cuisines. Today we’re celebrating this everyday hero of the kitchen — proof that sometimes the simplest foods make the biggest difference. 🥔♥️ #NationalPotatoDay
