Size does matter… Standard cholesterol tests aren’t telling the whole story. Most officers who suffer a heart attack never had “high cholesterol.” Here’s why: It’s not just about how much LDL or HDL you have—it’s about the size, density, and function of those particles. Small, dense LDL particles are far more dangerous than large, buoyant ones. They can more easily penetrate the arterial wall and trigger the development of plaque—leading to heart attacks and strokes. On the other hand, HDL isn’t just “good cholesterol.” Its real job is to remove excess cholesterol from the arteries and reduce inflammation. But that function is lost if the HDL is small or dysfunctional—a fact standard lipid panels won’t reveal. From being a patrol officer to a SWAT operator, special deputy U.S. marshal, and tactical medic, to donning the white coat as a cardiologist, I've followed my passion my entire life. I have also have had the privilege of serving in the USAF during combat operations during Operation Enduring Freedom. My life's mission revolves around safeguarding those who protect us. I have studied coronary disease my entire career and I have made it my life’s work to develop technology and practices to ensure the early detection of this disease, especially in our law enforcement personnel. Through my research, I've influenced new approaches to officer health, emphasizing the significance of preventive measures and early detection.
