The known details of Saint John of Damascus’s life tower to legendary heights. His family lived under Arab rule, earning the respect of their conqueror through their virtue and honor. With the trust they gained, John’s father freed Christian slaves and employed a great monk, Brother Cosmas, to tutor John. The young student soon surpassed his teacher and father in his studies and became a priest near Jerusalem. During this time, the issue of iconoclasm reached its height, and John Damascene was a central voice of reason encouraging the use of icons and their spiritual fruits. When John’s right hand was cut off for these views, he prayed before his Theotokos icon, and his hand was miraculously restored. St. John Damascene, pray for us!

Each day, Bishop Saturninus passed by a pagan temple, which was filled with oracles constantly spewing wicked prophecies. Whenever Saturninus drew near the temple, however, they were all struck dumb by his presence. The false priests realized this and seized Saturninus the next day. They demanded that he sacrifice to the pagan deities or pay for his crime in blood, to which Saturninus boldly declared: “I adore only one God. Your gods are devils which delight at the sacrifice of your souls and tremble before a Christian.” Enraged by this, the pagans tied Saturninus to a wild bull to be dragged to his death. St. Saturninus, pray for us!
