Preparing the future STEM workforce by providing opportunities for students from diverse backgrounds.

About us

Tapia Center at Rice University is dedicated to empowering all students to pursue education and careers in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Named after Dr. Richard Tapia, winner of the National Medal of Science and advocate for representation in STEM, The Tapia Center has educated a quarter of a million students and professionals about the importance of STEM and diversity to date. The Tapia Center hosts residential Tapia STEM camps for students from diverse racial and income backgrounds where campers will have the opportunity to work with Rice graduate and undergraduate students, collaborate on cross-disciplinary projects, cultivate STEM and communication skills, and establish connections with faculty, peers, and role models. Additionally, we offer Professional Development experiences for educators where we aim to equip participants to provide authentic and engaging instruction by strengthening their pedagogy. Participants design cross-disciplinary projects for implementation in their schools while expanding their professional network with fellow educators and earning Continuing Professional Education hours. We expose the vibrant world of STEM, igniting campers with opportunities to pursue a STEM career.
