I’ve spent the past several months working on this story. It’s about what happened to Andry Hernández Romero, a gay Venezuelan makeup artist who came to the U.S. seeking asylum, but instead got shipped by the Trump administration to CECOT for 125 days and the extraordinary coalition that refused to let him be disappeared into the Salvadoran torture prison. To tell this story, I spoke with the people who made that coalition work: Lindsay Toczylowski at Immigrant Defenders Law Center, who broke her own rule about going public to protect a client’s life. MSNBC's Rachel Maddow, whose coverage helped make Andry’s story impossible to ignore. The Bulwark's Tim Miller and Crooked Media's Jon Lovett, who turned outrage into action on stage during WorldPride. Shaniqua McClendon at Crooked Media, who explained the strategy behind making the public care. Monica Trasandes at GLAAD, who connected the word “disappeared” to its devastating history in Latin America. House Oversight Committee Ranking Member Rep. Robert Garcia, who traveled to El Salvador and demanded answers here at home. And Jonathan Lovitz at the Human Rights Campaign, who treated the case as the humanitarian crisis it was.
