What separates good software engineering teams from great ones? Buy-in. And not just to a project or goal - to the human beings the work will impact. One of the best teams I ever worked on had great buy-in, and it manifested in one particular client project we worked on. This client’s store team had been almost literally in the Stone Age before we started working with them. They were working on whiteboards and paper and physically moving things around in their stores. To bring them into a more current era, we modernized their workflows and digitized their data (and physical space). That part of the job was satisfying, of course, but what makes this experience memorable to me is how close we felt to our end users throughout the project. Each update we made to their system had a direct and positive impact on someone’s life within that company - and on their associates and customers too. We all felt extremely committed to making this customer’s life better, and because of that buy-in, none of the challenges were insurmountable. We recognized our unique opportunity to make a real impact on human beings, and we found that opportunity to be extremely motivating. Technical expertise is nice, yes. Even a must-have. But without what I call the Eagle Scout element (speaking from experience!) - the “leave it better than you found it” attitude - you’ll miss the chance to take a good team to great. So start with the human impact. Then worry about the code.

Dig in with Reid Colson, UDig’s Executive Vice President of Consulting Practices! 🔸 Tell us a little bit about yourself. I’ve spent 25 years proudly calling myself a data nerd, starting as an analyst and statistician at TeleCheck, where I built predictive models—including one for casino cash advances right out of grad school. Since then, I’ve held data-focused roles at Markel and Capital One, and now lead UDig’s consulting practices. I love the creative thinking and variety of problems we get to help clients solve across strategy, design, software, data, and AI. Outside of work, I’m a father, husband, golfer, woodworker, and committed dad-joke enthusiast. 🔸 What is your favorite procrastination tool? Good question, there’s so many to choose from! I really like Reddit because it has such a wide variety of information. I like subs where I can learn about other people’s side projects – especially small business ideas, those are fun to look at. I actually have my own sub called Golf Simulators, where people can talk about, well, golf simulators! It has about 70k followers now. I’m also big into video games, my favorite genre is probably sports. 🔸 What did you want to be when you grew up? Easy, pro-golfer. I played on a team in high school and then after about two years of not playing in college, I realized I should probably start studying. 🔸 What’s the most played song in your library? Lately it’s been Beer Never Broke my Heart, by Luke Combs. Aside from being pretty funny he can flat out sing. I’m not the most musically literate so I often listen to a podcast or an audio book. 🔸 What trivia category would you be best at? I am typically the the first one to get voted off a trivia team as it isn't really my wheel house. If I had to pick a topic it would be sports trivia. 🔸 How would you spend your day if we told you to take the day off? I would get my family together, head down to Lake Gaston, and take a boat out. We love being out on the water and don’t get to do it very often. Gaston is one of our favorite places to go – it’s really nice out there and my family and I always have a ton of fun spending time together there.

8 Weeks. 21 projects. 91% participation. A new level of AI capability across UDig. What started as an internal pilot to build AI fluency across UDig became something much bigger. In just eight weeks, our teams prototyped 21 AI solutions using 14 different models, spanning seven departments and more than 1,000 hours of experimentation. The result? Real hands-on learning, new ways of working, and a clear roadmap for accelerating AI adoption across the enterprise. Now, we’re bringing that same program, Airwave, to our clients. Eight weeks to go from AI curiosity to capability.

Most companies aren’t actually ready for agentic AI. At a recent CNBC Summit, as well as a Tractor Supply event, I heard the same theme over and over: companies are experimenting with AI, but most are still in the early stages. The technology is speeding ahead, but many organizations haven’t laid the foundation to utilize autonomous AI - agentic systems that make decisions and take action on their own - to their fullest potential. So I've started thinking about AI maturity in three buckets: 1. Assistant / Knowledge Base In this bucket, companies use AI to increase access to a ton of information that might have been siloed previously. Think conversational search - employees can chat with an AI assistant that can find things faster, summarize them, and even link the original source so they can go back and look at it. 2. Workflow Integration This is a step up from the “assistant” bucket. It’s where AI starts becoming embedded into workflows - an AI agent might kick off some kind of workflow to start executing some activities, but the agent doesn’t control the workflow. There’s still a human looped in who oversees the process as a whole. 3. Autonomous / Agentic AI Finally, we move on from workflow integration to a point where AI makes decisions and acts independently - what we call agentic AI. Now the agent can run the workflow by itself and even change the workflow based on what it thinks needs to happen. That last bucket is the frontier, but very few organizations are at this stage, and for good reason. There are two big barriers to getting to that third bucket of AI maturity: First, a lack of trust in data. If your data isn't clean, consistent, and relevant, you can't hand over decision-making to an AI agent. Garbage in, garbage out - except now it's making choices without you. Second, non-deterministic decision-making. Autonomous AI won't give you the same answer every time. That's a feature, not a bug, but it requires a level of comfort with ambiguity that most organizations simply aren't ready for. So before you chase agentic AI, ask yourself: Is our data ready? Do we have the right guardrails and security in place? Can we trust this system to act on our behalf? And remember, nobody's data is ever 100% clean. But there are ways to create a proxy between your data and the AI - ways to prepare, validate, and build confidence in what you're feeding these systems. The future of AI is no longer really about what’s possible, but rather, what you’re ready for.

Dig in with Reid Braswell, VP of Software Engineering! 🔸 Tell us a little bit about yourself. I’ve spent my career in IT consulting, starting in front-end engineering before expanding into full-stack development and solution architecture. At UDig, I lead our software engineering practice - supporting talent development, hiring, coaching, and ensuring strong client delivery. I focus on aligning people’s strengths with their goals while overseeing high-quality, enterprise-level project outcomes. Outside of work, I’m a father of two, technology enthusiast, ice cream lover, avid gamer, and proud Tar Heel. 🔸 What is your favorite procrastination tool? My wife and I love binge-watching TV shows – Brooklyn Nine-Nine and New Girl are favorites. I also tend to procrastinate by diving into technical reading, chasing down information about things that spark my interest. 🔸 What did you want to be when you grew up? Believe it or not, an orthodontist! I’ve always loved making people laugh and smile, and I think there’s real joy in building relationships, even in small moments. A smile can make a huge difference in someone’s confidence and the joy they experience, and I liked the idea of being able to provide that for people. 🔸 What’s the most played song in your library? Anything by Jack Johnson—no particular album, just all of his music! 🔸 What trivia category would you be best at? College basketball! 🔸 How would you spend your day if we told you to take the day off? I’d spend it with my family, enjoying some of Richmond’s best spots. Ice cream at Gelati Celesti would definitely be on the list, and we’d spend plenty of time outdoors.
