Jared was recognized for his outstanding service, leadership and collaboration with numerous partner organizations. His work spans from shaping Union County’s Rural Land Use Plan and supporting controlled burns at Cane Creek Park, to volunteering with the Firefighters’ Burned Children’s Fund and advancing cross-departmental emergency response training. Union County leadership is proud to honor Assistant Fire Marshal Chad Baucom with the Lifesaver Award for his heroic actions while off duty. While vacationing with his family at the beach, Baucom heard cries for help from the ocean. Without hesitating, he and a bystander rushed to an unconscious man, brought him to shore and performed CPR. He continued to assist local responders until the man was taken to a hospital. We are proud to celebrate the incredible career of Monica Lisa Belk (Smith), who is retiring after 30 years of dedicated service with Union County Social Services! Monica has been awarded The Order of the Long Leaf Pine, one of the highest honors bestowed by the Governor of North Carolina. This recognition reflects her unwavering commitment to public service and the lasting impact she has made on our community. Throughout her career, Monica held several key leadership roles, including Child Welfare Intake Supervisor and Program Administrator for the Adult and Children’s Division. She also served on multiple community boards, always striving to support and protect the most vulnerable members of our population. Monica is known for her enthusiastic personality, strong work ethic, and remarkable dedication to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of children and disabled adults in Union County.
