At our 2025 Major Gift Donor Recognition event last week, we celebrated the generosity of our Red Feather and Philanthropist Society members at the Shoreby Club.   These donors have contributed over $5.9 million, supporting essential programs like United Way 211, which connects people to housing, food, emergency resources, and more. Black Philanthropy Month is a time to reflect on the legacy of generosity in Black communities and the responsibility to carry it forward. In a recent article, United Way of Central Indiana Emerging Leader Milan Ball shares how the Sankofa bird symbolizes this journey: flying forward while looking back, protecting the fragile, promising future we all share.   United Way values the tradition of Black philanthropy as a powerful force for community strength and change. It has long centered community care through mutual aid, churches, and civic groups. These are not new ideas; they are inherited wisdom we are called to honor and evolve.    While August is designated as Black Philanthropy Month, the principles of generosity, community support, and Black leadership are relevant and celebrated year-round. If you or someone you work with receives Summer EBT (SUN Bucks) benefits, now is the time to make the most of them. • Benefits expire four months after they are issued, and unused funds will be lost. • Cards can be used for groceries, including fresh produce, dairy, and other staples. • Households should keep their Summer EBT card—the same card will be used again next year if the family is eligible. Last week we brought together more than 450 Humanitarian Society donors and their families at Progressive Field to say thank you for their continued support.
