🌀 𝗗𝗔𝗬 𝟭 𝗮𝘁 𝗠𝗦𝗦𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱: 𝗥𝗲𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗳𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 - and what a day it’s been ... full of energy, ideas, laughter, deep debate, and yes… even a little dancing. 💃🏽🕺🏾 💡 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟭 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆: 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗪𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗳𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 Across every conversation today, one truth stood out: systems thinking is what makes the shift to local possible. By seeing interconnections, power dynamics, and incentives clearly, we can move beyond top-down fixes toward 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀. We heard how local funding and leadership create faster, more relevant responses. How local alliances and networks keep systems strong through disruption. And how locally grounded learning and decision-making are transforming the way markets, programs, and partnerships evolve. Whether in finance, food, or fisheries, the message was clear: 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗹𝗲𝗱, 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗱. 𝘔𝘰𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘮𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘶𝘮 We opened with 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗻 Market Systems Symposium 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀, led by Dumisani Nyoni and Margie Brand, grounding us in how far this community has come. Then came a look at 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲, each sharing how they’re adapting for real systems impact. The “𝗠𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲” plenary took us straight into the deep end, with powerful insights from leaders at Corus International, Tanager, Ndarama Works, Dalberg, and ELIM, plus a thought-provoking virtual contribution from Omidyar Network. The big challenge: If you could change one thing about how international development works, what would it be? 🔥 Then came ABALOBI, showing how a 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁-𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗳𝘁 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀, from the hook to the plate, while redefining what ocean resilience and inclusive economies look like in practice. 🌊 𝙇𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 & 𝙖𝙛𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙣𝙤𝙤𝙣 𝙗𝙪𝙯𝙯 The Breakouts and Deep Dive Dialogues that followed were electric, from 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 and 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 to 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗰𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝘆, and 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲. Rooms hummed with real, grounded conversation. People weren’t just exchanging ideas; they were sketching collaborations. 𝘼𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙣 - 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙜𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙛𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙡𝙚 We closed with “𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻” where the entire room moved together. There was movement, laughter, and even dancing as we explored complexity and connection not just as theory, but as practice. A fitting close to a day about adapting, responding, and reimagining systems in motion. ✨

🌀 𝗗𝗔𝗬 𝟮 𝗮𝘁 𝗠𝗦𝗦𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱: 𝗔𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗔𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 🔥 From futures thinking to AI, from fragile contexts to circular economies - Day 2 at Market Systems Symposium was all about what it means to adapt faster and think further ahead. The Durban ICC was buzzing with ideas, connections, and serious momentum. We began with plenary interview by Margie Brand on 𝗽𝗶𝘃𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗮 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵, featuring powerful case studies from Mercy Corps (agriculture) and Habitat for Humanity International (housing), showing how shifting from project delivery to systems facilitation is transforming both sectors. These conversations grounded the day in real examples of systems change in motion. Then came the 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗿𝘆, where Deon Cloete (SAIIA), and Mike Field (Vikāra Institute) applied the Three Horizons Framework to development challenges - exploring how to balance the urgent needs of today with the transformations needed for tomorrow. Breakouts took that thinking into action: 🌍 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗹𝗲 & 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁𝘀 - how to build resilience amid disruption. 🌿 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 - from circular models to green jobs. 🌐 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 - linking local value chains into global networks. 🚀 𝗘𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 - building sustainable pipelines for MSMEs. The afternoon 𝗧𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗰𝘀 were electric with dozens of tools in action. From 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 and 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘆 to 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 and 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗰𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴, delegates traded frameworks, lessons, and field-tested methods with infectious enthusiasm. We closed with a thought-provoking plenary debate on 𝗔𝗜 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 - unpacking how artificial intelligence could transform (or fracture) the development landscape. Is AI the great accelerator - or the next disruptor? The discussion was lively, nuanced, and deeply relevant. 💡 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟮 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆: 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗡𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 If Day 1 was about how systems thinking can support shifting power to local, Day 2 showed how systems thinking helps us navigate what’s next - connecting the dots between technology, green transitions, and adaptive leadership.
