West Chester University has received the largest single gift in its history through a remarkable 52-acre land donation from an anonymous donor. Fondly known as Ridley Springs, the property transfer has resulted in 4.7-million-dollars to directly benefit West Chester University of Pennsylvania students through a visionary partnership with East Whiteland Township. This agreement ensures the land will be permanently preserved as open space for the community and serve as a living laboratory for WCU students. This extraordinary journey began more than three years ago when an anonymous donor gifted a collection of art books to the University’s Art Department. That simple gesture led to meaningful conversations and a shared love of art, which ultimately revealed a much larger opportunity. With care and guidance from Dr John H Baker, Professor Emeritus of Art and current Foundation board member, those conversations evolved into a generous offer — the chance for the University to acquire a farm. While the WCU Foundation stewarded the property for over a year and a half, East Whiteland Township worked tirelessly to secure its long-term preservation. Through the support of Chester County, the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources the passage of an open space referendum, the Township brought together the resources needed to bring this vision to life. On June 17, University and township leaders gathered at Ridley Springs for a formal signing ceremony to mark this transformational moment. The preserved land will provide hands on, applied learning opportunities for students across fields such as sustainability, health, geographic information systems, science, and the arts. This partnership reflects the incredible power of collaboration and stands as a lasting testament to the anonymous donor’s vision to unite education, conservation, and public benefit. Special thanks to KatiMac Education Foundation for the stunning florals and to Seedling and Sage for the exceptional catering that helped bring warmth and beauty to this milestone celebration.
