Howard University has entered a three-year partnership with Blavity, Inc., parent company of AfroTech, to lead and curate “The Yard @ AfroTech” at the 2025-2027 conferences in Houston, Texas. Designed as a signature cultural and professional commons, “The Yard” debuted at AfroTech 2024, where it showcased HBCU excellence and highlighted contributions to innovation, research and thought leadership in technology. The activation created a dynamic space for students, alumni, and professionals to connect through networking, mentorship, and career-building insights. I'm constantly shocked by how many HBCU founders don't know other HBCU alum VCs. When I was a HBCUvc Fellow, I learned that a lot of this comes down to lack of education and context on how to build the right relationships. Over the last few months, I've been advising founders on their growth strategy and connecting them to resources that help them scale. I've compiled a list of 10 HBCU alum venture investors I've worked with in the past or have admired from afar: • Jewel Burks Solomon: Economic mobility, healthcare, and supply-chain • Elliott Robinson: Cloud infrastructure, developer tools, AI / ML • Lo Toney: Enterprise software, fintech, developer tools, marketplaces • Arian Simone: Consumer brands, retail, enterprise • Aaron Holiday: B2B SaaS, marketplaces, consumer tech • Nasir C. Qadree: Fintech, future of work, education • Paul Judge: Enterprise SaaS and cybersecurity • De'Havia Stewart: Fintech and consumer tech • Tori Orr: Deep tech, robotics, and mobility • Damian Murray: Fintech and SMB enablement Before reaching out for capital, build your foundation of angel investors, and early traction. I know many Black founders don't have wealthy networks to tap. That makes your traction story even more critical. Start building these thoughtful relationships now and share monthly or quarterly updates. The Reality of Black Tax "Black tax" refers to the financial support many Black professionals provide to extended family, covering school fees, medical bills, and household expenses. While rooted in cultural values of Ubuntu and family responsibility, it can become a financial strain, delaying wealth creation, investment, and personal goals. For many, black tax is not just an obligation but an expectation—one rarely discussed yet deeply felt. It affects career choices, mental well-being, and financial independence, often creating a cycle where wealth is redistributed rather than accumulated. The Numbers Tell a Story Consider a scenario where someone gives K100 to three relatives daily. Over a month, that’s K9,000—far exceeding Zambia’s average household income of K3,442.90. This highlights how black tax can consume a substantial portion of one’s income, leaving little room for personal savings or investments. The Emotional Toll Beyond the financial burden, black tax carries an emotional toll. Relatives forget that relationships influence how one helps. You are naturally inclined to assist those you have a genuine connection with—people you talk to, check in on, and who show concern for your well-being. However, many judge based on superficial success. You may drive a nice car or live in a decent home, and from afar, some assume you owe them a share. They don’t consider your struggles or responsibilities. When you can’t or won’t give, they find someone to blame—often a spouse or parent. This misplaced resentment isolates individuals and can impact mental health, leading to stress and avoidance of interactions. My Personal Take I have accepted that black tax is part of my reality, but I manage it in a way that doesn’t leave me drained—emotionally or financially. Saying no isn’t easy, but if I don’t set boundaries, I’ll work hard and have nothing to show for it. I help where I can, but not at the expense of my future. I’ve also learned I can’t control how others perceive me. Some will believe I have more than I do, resent me when I say no, or blame someone else for my choices. And that’s okay. What matters is building a future that allows me to help in a sustainable way—on my terms. If you’re in the same boat, start having honest conversations about money—not just with family, but with yourself. Because at the end of the day, we cannot pour from an empty cup.

Under Governor Phil Murphy's leadership, the percentage of Black-owned businesses continues to grow, from 1.94% in 2018 to 3.36% in 2022. Last year, the NJEDA supported nearly 500 black-owned businesses with $7.8M from its Main Street Recovery Program. During Black History Month, the NJEDA reaffirms its commitment to supporting diverse entrepreneurs. 3 mistakes I've made on this journey of building out Black Recruiters Network 🧡 --- *There's definitely been more than 3 on this journey but it's a nice number for these kinda posts* --- 🧡 Bringing solo & independent energy to community building Back near the start of this journey, BRN was at the point of going from a simple LI group to a fully fledged community and actively turning this into something bigger. At the time, I was deeeeep into my Miss Independent bag and in the trenches building up hire|py , that I went into full decision maker mode with BRN. But one thing I quickly realised is that when it comes to community building, it actually has very little to do with the founder. Yes, I will put in the hours and do my best to create a positive environment, but at the core, community building is simply creating a space for members to connect with eachother and be a part of a network that serves them. How that happens, can't be down to 1 person! 🧡 Deviating from our core purpose This one here....had me taking every side step away from the reason of why BRN exists. ✨️ To connect, champion & support Black professionals in the world of recruitment. Simple. As we've grown, our purpose has grown to maximise the impact a community like BRN can have ✨️ Partner with organisations to tackle specific challenges; questioning existing systems, processes and biases across the recruitment landscape ✨️ Leverage our collective expertise to give back to mission-led communities to demystify recruitment Every few months or so, I always look back at the time just gone and see if we ticked at least 1 of these pillars.....if not, it's time to recentre. 🧡 Overloading my responsibilities & not delegating I feel like this is a classic for alot of people. You don't have to be a founder to learn this lesson. Building out the BRN team is one of the best decisions I've made but the skill of delegation is one I'll constantly be learning.
