It’s economical and soft, but less uniform — commonly used in basic fabrics. 2️⃣ Combed Yarn An extra step removes short fibers and impurities post-carding. The result: smoother, finer, stronger yarn — ideal for premium garments. 3️⃣ Ring Spun Yarn Twisted and thinned using ring frames. This yarn is strong, uniform, and soft — widely used in high-quality textiles. 4️⃣ Rotor (Open-End) Spun Yarn Fibers are fed into a rotor and twisted rapidly. Why different types of yarns lead to different levels of Fragmented Fibres (microplastics) shedding? I am pleased to share our most recent article on using x-ray computed microtomography to non-destructively study the 3D microstructure of Ring, Rotor and Airjet yarns made from Polyester (PET) fibres. This is a novel contribution to study structure of yarns, and also develops structure-property relationships to describe how different yarn structures are associated to different levels of Fragmented Fibre shedding. Thrilled to share our recent study on “Moisture Management Behavior of Cut Protective Fabric Produced from High-Performance Core-Spun Yarn,” conducted in collaboration with IIT Delhi and supported by the National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM). Here are some real challenges we face in the industry: 🔸Inconsistent Yarn Quality. Spinners may promise the specs, but batch-to-batch variations in strength, evenness, and hairiness can disrupt weaving performance. A single weak link can cause loom stoppages or fabric rejections. 🔸Raw Material Volatility. Cotton prices fluctuate, synthetic raw material availability swings, and sustainability-certified fibers (like organic cotton or BCI) often face supply shortages. All these impacts lead to time and cost predictability. 🔸Lack of Traceability & Transparency. More buyers are demanding full traceability. But getting end-to-end visibility, especially for multi-fiber blends, is still a major hurdle, particularly in less digitised supply chains. 🔸Matching Yarn to Fabric End-Use Yarn needs to complement the final fabric's purpose - be it for shirting, home textiles, or industrial use.
