Everyone should vote. These transitioning times are part of everyone’s political journey. Why then do some people pick up pitch forks and protest while others choose to not vote at all over things so essential like internet access? Experiencing America through the lenses of the historical “mothers of the country” aka Black women is the necessary to understanding the underbelly causes and reactions of American politics.Often, Black women are painted as angry or misinformed, especially when running for office. As key figures such as Kamala Harris, Stacey Abrams, and Ayanna Presley continue to make headway towards higher offices, it is mission critical to dismiss misogynoir – misogyny directed towards Black women where race and gender play roles in bias. Suffering from double bias has limited the progression of Black female politicians, making it hard for them to be elected or push issues of personal concern.With Pen and Voice: A Critical Anthology of Nineteenth-Century African-American Women by Shirley Wilson Logan notes the snail’s pace growth of Black women in politics in the previous century.
