Things I’ve noticed while applying to entertainment industry jobs for over a month now: •the pay rates offered for most roles have not changed since I was applying 5+ years ago. Truly disheartening. •I am qualified/overqualified for most jobs and continually see over 100+ applicants for most job posts. Are these applicants just throwing spaghetti on the wall or actually qualified? Very curious to know this. •attaching a PDF of my resume AND having to do the autofill (then correct the mistakes of the autofill) is time-consuming, superfluous, and frustrating. •if you’re asking for a Cover Letter and actually read it, that’s great. But overall, asking for Cover Letters seems so outdated when we know social media profiles are basically the new Cover Letters. •the extra dense/verbose job descriptions seem unnecessary. Companies should exercise being more succinct and concise about what’s expected. And if you’re going to have a long winded way to describe what in actuality is a simple task, just give a “for example” in parentheticals. It’d be helpful. Don’t have us guess what our job would entail. •biggest gripe recently: there was a somewhat high-level position offering less than what a server makes hourly by waiting tables in West Hollywood. SMH. Respect your applicants and employees! Offer competitive wages!

#tiptuesday With #disneyinternships right around the corner, I wanted to share some key points that I provide when I conduct resume workshops for #students. These tips can be used by anyone looking to improve their #resume. ✅ Appearance: Your resume has to look good at a glance. Simple fonts, no bright colors, good white space, etc. ✅ Keywords: It is a must to have keywords in your resume. Look for the technical terms and softskills mentioned in the Job Description and add them to your document. ✅ Laser-Focused: Your resume needs to be tailored to the role you’re applying for. Ensure your skills and experience align with the opportunity prior to applying. ✅ Format: Ensure your resume is formatted properly. This goes hand-in-hand with appearance. ✅ Adaptability: One resume does not fit every Job Description. I just called a candidate with the worst resume I’ve ever seen—it was only five lines, just job titles and dates. That’s it. Nothing else. But get this—the job titles listed were exactly what I was looking for, so I had to call. We both had a good laugh about how bad the resume was, and turns out, the candidate had just gotten back on the job market after a break. Once we talked through the position and all the requirements, it was obvious he was a solid choice. So, in a way, that terrible resume worked. It got my attention. It also taught me that a resume is only the start of a journey, good or bad. It's still worth calling all of them.

Hard to believe it’s been 5 years at TikTok 🎉 And what a journey it’s been. From the early days of figuring out how to navigate a new industry to where we are today, it’s been an incredible ride full of growth, change, and learning 🌱 Here are 5 lessons I’ve learned along the way: 1️⃣ Growth rarely looks like a straight line. Sometimes it’s sideways, diagonal, or feels like a circle, but it’s all part of the process. Progress isn’t always visible in the moment 🔄 2️⃣ Who you work with matters as much as what you work on. A good team can make tough challenges easier and big goals more fun. I’ve been lucky to work alongside some brilliant and generous people 🤝 3️⃣ Feedback is a gift, but only if you’re open to receiving it. The most meaningful growth often comes after uncomfortable conversations 💬 4️⃣ Don’t wait to be ‘ready’ before trying something new. Imposter syndrome shows up uninvited. Dive in anyway, that’s usually where the learning happens 📚 5️⃣ Celebrate the wins, even the small ones. Momentum is built through recognition and reflection. Companies that offer "unpaid" summer internships are immoral and reckless. Instead, you should charge interns for the chance to work at your company. When interns ask about compensation during the interview process, you should always tell them truth by saying "We offer highly competitive compensation, with the base rate starting at minimum wage." Once their first "paycheck" hits, they will see that they actually owe your company money. When they inevitably ask you if there was some sort of mistake, just gaslight them by saying "Correct me if I'm wrong but it sounds like you think WE should be paying YOU for US giving YOU valuable experience." Guilt trip them and make them feel selfish for expecting money. When they get defensive and aggressive by saying "But I turned down paid internships so that I could accept this one" then you need to go on the offense and say "Well, if you mention anything that happens here publicly then you will be breaking our NDA and I will be bringing you to court and you'll never work in this industry ever again." Interns who expect to get paid are privileged and should be avoided at all costs. They have a silver spoon mindset and will likely not help your company anyway.
