It was an absolute privilege moderating an insightful discussion with Rajesh V., Chairman & MD, Cognizant India and Nitin Seth, Co-Founder & CEO, Incedo Inc., on “Bots, Jobs, and the Big Shift: Adapting to AI” at the nasscom Technology and Leadership Forum 2025. According to EY’s latest research, AI could transform 38 million jobs in India by 2030, boosting productivity by 2.6% in the organized sector. 24% of tasks performed by humans can be fully automated, while 42% can be partially automated. The panel debated what the AI shift means for the tech services sector: - AI will have a profound impact across the IT/BPO industry. Up to half the tasks performed by humans could be fully automated. Productivity gains would vary by task-type. For instance, call center management and software development could respectively see an 80% and 60% productivity uplift. Material impact on jobs will become "visible" soon - as early as 18 months - Tech services companies need to rethink their approach to re-skilling. Despite increasing investments in training, many players grapple with the inability to capture revenue pools due to demand-supply gaps. Investing in building domain + solution + tech capabilities is critical - The AI shift and convergence of services and software are making the traditional tech services operating model obsolete. As agents start doing the work of freshers and managers, the talent pyramid will look very different. Perhaps a rhombus with a thin/missing middle? One thing is for certain: AI will enable far fewer people to deliver a lot more work. This will impact pricing and commercial constructs. It will also require companies to cannibalize their own revenues to stay competitive and drive future growth   - AI-native start-ups are aggressively productizing the work of IT/BPO companies. Incumbents with superior distribution need to learn from disruptors with superior innovation. Tech arbitrage is not enough. Winning will require innovation arbitrage. What would it take to make the elephant dance? An entrepreneurial culture that celebrates problem finding, not just problem solving    - Obsessive experimentation and urgent reinvention are critical for survival. There's a major flux affecting GCCs in India and a leadership crisis that's brewing beneath the surface.  Yes, we've evolved from back-office operations to value centers. Yes, we're handling AI initiatives and driving innovation.  But while GCCs celebrate their digital transformation, our extensive work with their leaders has revealed what nobody's addressing:  The current leadership architecture wasn't built for this seismic shift.  We'll have 30,000 global leadership roles by 2030 (up from 5,000 today). But we're still trying to retrofit an "order-taker" mindset into a "value-creator" role, and the cracks are starting to show.  This goes beyond upgrading skills. It's about fundamentally reimagining what GCC leadership means in an era where India isn't just participating in global business, but actively shaping it.  The shift is inevitable. And with it, the need to re-frame the guiding principles that determine success.  We've been doing extensive work to understand the factors that drive GCC growth from a leadership lens.
