#NorthCountryNews: NYPA is beginning the final phase of decommissioning and stabilizing the former Alcoa Power Dam in Massena. Starting next month, the 577-foot-long structure will be transformed into an earthen dam, marking a significant milestone in restoring the area’s natural landscape.   A North Country-based contractor will lead the project, bringing local expertise to a site deeply rooted in the community’s industrial history. Michels Power, Inc. is part of the larger Michels Corporation,one of the leading contractors in North America that works across power, foundations, energy, transportation, and infrastructure projects. Within power delivery, they not only build and maintain transmission lines but also handle the specialized foundation work that keeps those lines safe and stable in challenging environments. In Boone County, West Virginia, Michels’ foundations crew was tasked with protecting a transmission line structure on a steep mountainside. The concern was that the slope could slip or erode, which would put the transmission tower at risk. To prevent this, the team used a method called soil nailing. Soil nails are essentially long steel rods that are drilled into the slope and anchored deep into stable ground. When installed in a grid pattern and often combined with concrete facing, they strengthen the slope and keep it from sliding much like reinforcing rebar in concrete. On this project, Michels installed 35 soil nails into the mountain slope. The location presented unusual challenges: - The site was near the top of a remote mountain, with no easy road access. - Because of this, Michels had to use a helicopter to fly equipment up to the site. - Crews then worked in rugged, high-elevation conditions to safely install the soil nails and stabilize the slope. The result was a reinforced slope that secured the transmission line structure and ensured reliable power delivery in a difficult environment.
