Confession: I didn't want to do Crisis Communications Planning. But, when 2020 revealed how vulnerable the organizations we served were, I knew I needed to build this into our client toolkit. And I'm glad I did. It's been so personally rewarding for me to strengthen and equip these people and organizations we care about. Case in point: We just wrapped a comprehensive Crisis Communications Plan and simulation with an international nonprofit doing vital work. A crisis hasn't hit yet, but they've already started using the messaging we developed, and understanding how to triage Incidents, Crises, and Complex Topics. The best communication in crisis starts long before the crisis hits. It’s about preparation of consistent and wise messages, clarity of roles, collecting your information, informing your team, and knowing you have a thorough plan that brings peace of mind, and makes quick decisions possible. Build your organization's reputation in peacetime, monitor it for vulnerability, protect it in crisis. Debrief. Learn. Revise. And keep building. Does your team know what to say (and not say) when the pressure is on? If not, it might be time for a Plan.

The exit of working mothers from the labor force in 2025 is driven by several factors: childcare shortages and costs, rising eldercare needs, and rigid return-to-office policies are among the top reasons. (These issues impact women’s careers more than men’s.) One key metric I follow on this topic is the Parental Work Disruption Index, which continues to rise (see the KPMG chart below). This index measures the percentage of workers impacted by inadequate childcare options compared to the pre-pandemic baseline. Local news has always mattered to me. I started Muck Rack with journalists in mind, and I’ve seen firsthand how hard it’s become to keep local reporting alive. That’s why we partnered with Rebuild Local News to launch the Local Journalist Index—the first report that actually counts how many local journalists are working in every U.S. county. Not how many outlets exist, but how many people are doing the work. Some takeaways: - 1 in 3 counties don’t even have one local journalist - Even high-population counties like LA and Dallas are severely undercovered We built this using Muck Rack’s journalist data and input from some of the smartest people working on the future of local news. Marketing and career services have a shared problem. They both often fall into the trap of “random acts of marketing” (or advising, programming…). In marketing, that looks like teams mistaking a flurry of completed tasks for real impact: Blog? Posted. Emails? Sent. Webinar? Scheduled. One pager? Designed. But the leads aren’t coming. The pipeline isn’t growing. And the strategy? Forgotten. Career services teams often fall into the same cycle: Resume workshops, alumni panels, job boards, career fairs, appointments, employer outreach… They’re doing all the things, and yet still wondering: Why aren’t more students engaging? Why aren’t outcomes improving? The work is non-stop. The calendar is full. The team is exhausted. But just like in marketing: activity doesn’t automatically equal impact. And the answer isn’t always to do more, add more, build more or hire more. Sometimes the most strategic move is to pause and ask: -What are we actually trying to achieve? -Which efforts are truly moving the needle? -How can we maximize the impact of the things we’re already doing and investing in? Because in both marketing and career services, real strategy means aligning your work with the highest-level goals of the institution, and then making sure the work is fully activated. A great campaign or resource can only create value if people actually see it, use it, engage with it. Distribution matters. Visibility matters. Optimization matters. A long checklist might look (and feel) productive… Until you realize it’s just a collection of disconnected tasks…not a strategy.
