📈There seem to be significant shifts in demand occurring in our food systems, not just in the US but also in the UK. The chart below is from David Wainer’s article in the Wall Street Journal, highlighting the decline in sales of snacks and processed products alongside the rise of healthier options, including high-protein foods and fresh produce. New data from Ocado Retail in March showed a substantial change in UK consumer habits, with searches for "high protein" foods doubling (+105%) year-on-year. Shoppers are increasingly embracing natural protein sources such as chicken breast (+20% sales), steak (+24%), and cottage cheese (+97% searches). This trend is being propelled by health trends and social media recipes. Plant-based options like edamame (+44%) and chickpeas (+27%) are also experiencing significant growth. Ocado say, nearly half (43%) of consumers have increased their protein intake, with 62% of those aged 16-34 leading this trend. 💡What fascinates me is the magnitude of these changes in demand. Food industry trends used to take years to shift, and I was accustomed to seeing single-digit sales trends. Today, with the internet, social media, and the rapid dissemination of information through AI, changes are happening much more quickly. As a consumer, I can encounter claims on social media about health, and instead of relying solely on a Google search, I can validate that information by querying my AI colleagues, Claude, Gemini, and Grok. This is a big shift in spending hours trawling through blue links The world is accelerating in change, and businesses need to have the technology and tooling to adapt. The funding and dealmaking trends indicate that in the face of declining investor interest, consolidation is proving to be a viable alternative for some companies in the once-hot food tech space. Nathan Cooper of Barrel Ventures shares, “Many of the companies that were funded were years, if not decades away from commercial viability. They were seeing tech valuations, and required substantial amounts of cap-ex, when at the end of the day what they were selling was a CPG (consumer packaged goods) product and should have been valued as such.” Andrew D Ive of Big Idea Ventures commented, “Valuations have normalized compared to two years ago, creating an attractive window for strategic buyers to acquire de-risked, well-funded companies with validated technologies — often at reasonable prices.” This is a great article by Crunchbase highlighting the consolidation activity of the foodtech space.
