I was excited to join the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta’s Financial Markets Conference to moderate a panel on the growing role of nonbank institutions in the Treasury and money markets. Thank you to panelists Lou Crandall, Deirdre Dunn and Nathaniel Wuerffel for providing valuable insights on this important trend and its implications for the financial system.    While Treasury and money markets are extraordinarily strong, deep and liquid, they are not invulnerable. Limited intermediation capacity, buildups of leverage and uneven risk management can all lead to market dysfunction, especially when large shocks hit. The panel was a great opportunity to share views on approaches to improve market resilience to these vulnerabilities, such as broader central clearing.  These discussions deepen the Federal Reserve System’s understanding of market dynamics and influence my views on policy for financial markets. I scaled two banks from $24B to $32B as CMO and learned why most community banks never see that kind of growth: they lack access to the expertise that drives measurable growth.
