As a recruiter, I often speak with internal and external candidates who feel frustrated by their job search. When we take a closer look at the roles they’ve applied for, many are aiming for positions that are a significant leap from where they currently stand. For example, if you were the lead anchor or producer for your college’s student-run TV station, that’s a great start, but it doesn’t mean you’re ready to anchor SportsCenter, Good Morning America, or the 5 pm newscast in a top 10 market. Those roles require experience that takes time to build. Here’s the truth: the more honest you are about your current qualifications, the better your chances of landing interviews and offers for roles you’re truly ready for. Growth takes time. Be strategic. Be realistic. And most importantly, be honest with yourself.

#Recruiting 101 (Recruiting is a Verb Vol III) Recruiters, tired of low fill rates and endless scrolling? There's one thing you can change to dramatically improve your time-to-fill. Proactive sourcing. Instead of just posting jobs (or literature) and waiting for applications, dedicate time each day to actively seeking out qualified candidates. Use LinkedIn Recruiter, industry-specific job boards, and even networking events (virtual or in-person) to identify potential fits before a role even opens (essentially leveraging workforce planning). Build relationships, understand their career goals, and have them in mind when the perfect opportunity arises. It’s crazy to me that recruiting scams are even targeting recruiters. I have received several messages in the last few weeks. If anyone ever asks to discuss a job over whats app it should be a hard no! To me this is glaringly obvious it’s a scam but sharing in case others don’t have this awareness. If you receive a message from a recruiter please do your research and confirm their profile looks legitimate before moving forward with their requests. These scammers are getting more creative and bold. We have to stick together!

If you've been impacted by layoffs and came to LinkedIn to gain advice on the job hunt, application process or resume tips, etc, great! LinkedIn is the spot to be, 100%. However, if you're specifically looking for assistance from a recruiter on LinkedIn, I recommend FIRST connecting with a recruiter that assisted you throughout your career. Even one from years ago. Not the recruiter that you have no connection with, not in your field, or who has worked at "every single big tech or fortune 500 company" and claims to know it all. Touch base with the recruiter who: 1. Took care of you, the one that advocated for you and fought for your compensation. 💪 2. The one who motivated you and prepped you before your panel interview. 👏 3. The recruiter that referred you to other leaders, shared your resume and checked in from time to time. 💖 Not someone you don't know or claims to know it all. Word around town, being a good person doesn't go out of style. 👏

If your desired position exceeds your current qualifications, express your interest in developing the necessary skills.
