Corporate demand for clean energy remains very strong! A new report from Clean Energy Buyers Association (CEBA) and Wood Mackenzie estimates that U.S. corporate demand for carbon-free electricity will reach 275 GW by 2035 – or roughly 3x the clean energy procured by large energy consumers in the past decade. The International Energy Agency's new Global Methane Tracker report found that abandoned oil and gas wells and abandoned coal mines are a larger contributor of methane emissions than previously understood -- for each industry, abandoned infrastructure appears to be releasing around 5-10% of total sector emissions -- in addition to other environmental impacts including groundwater and surface water contamination. Legacy energy infrastructure clean-up is a major and urgent global challenge, but the benefits of committing to that effort are significant: emissions reductions, job creation, environmental clean-up, and new clean energy opportunities in and around abandoned oil and gas and coal mine sites. Clean-up costs are likely high -- the report estimates $100B (though I suspect much higher) -- but the economic benefits via remediation wages, improved property values, climate mitigation and new energy uses of previously degraded land and geology are even greater.
