Operating profit at the firm slumped 41% to $210 million in the year to 2nd February 2025, from $357 million the year prior. 🪫 Gadgets sold without batteries. Toys sold in slimmed-down boxes or no packaging at all. These are some of the ways consumer product companies are retooling their wares to reduce costs and avoid raising prices. 🥕 Instacart is releasing two new solutions called Store View and Second Store Check, both designed to improve its real-time understanding of what’s on store shelves. It is integrating more closely with retailers' inventory systems. 💰 Sweeping tariffs are expected to raise the cost of various imported products. However, President Trump and his advisers argue that Americans should be willing to pay more for domestic products. 🍽️ Hooters, the restaurant chain known for chicken wings and skimpy waitstaff outfits, has filed for bankruptcy protection. HOA Restaurant Group filed the motion for Chapter 11 on Monday. ⛽️ California now has more electric vehicle chargers than gas pumps. The count includes EV chargers in private homes and businesses, but that’s not a technicality that cancels its meaning. 📉 Asda’s sales slump has intensified as discount store Aldi closes in on the struggling supermarket. The British grocer’s sales dropped 5.6% in the 12 weeks to March 23. 🌸 Finnish design house Marimekko is sticking to its core aesthetic — oversized florals, splashy stripes and bold prints — as it approaches its 75th year in business. However, it's also updating its digital presence. 🐶 Shoppers are remaining cautious about making many purchases for themselves. But many are still spending on their pets. Retailers and brands have indicated this earnings season that pet owners are continuing to spend. 💷 UK retailers are bracing for a surge in added operating costs amounting to £5.56bn, with a significant portion expected to be passed on to consumers through higher prices. 🎬 Amazon will take center stage this week at the annual convention for theater owners, spending several millions dollars to parade a stream of A-list stars. 🇨🇦 As part of its restructuring, Canadian department store Hudson's Bay Company will eliminate 200 corporate roles effective Friday. 📦 A voluntary pause on delivery of online orders via drone at Amazon has been lifted. Just wrapped an incredible session with Google’s Retail Advisory Council, where CMOs from some of the world’s leading retailers - Target, Kohl’s, Sephora, Fanatics, and more - came together to discuss what’s next in retail. A few themes stood out loud and clear: - Quality > Quantity: Product feeds aren’t just plumbing—they’re brand. Images, descriptions, and video are now the front line of differentiation. - AI is the new workforce: We have a 24/7 team that never sleeps. The question isn’t if we’ll use AI agents across every function, but how fast we can build and scale them. - YouTube is the new prime time: Incremental TV reach still matters, but the next generation of brand building is happening on YouTube. - Personalization is non-negotiable: The industry is moving toward single-page, demand-led, fully personalized commerce experiences. My biggest takeaway? The future is here, it’s just not evenly distributed. Those who lean into AI, brand, and creative excellence today will set the pace for tomorrow.
