Friday thoughts: 📞 some SOC provider red flags to watch out for… If you are hearing one or more of these from your SOC/MDR provider, it’s not a partnership — it’s a liability. SOC Provider: “Our detection rules are our IPR, so you can’t see them.” Me: Ah, the old “security through obscurity” move. SOC Provider: “We can’t show you our triage process or playbooks, but we’ll provide a summary.” Me: Ah, the “trust me, trust me” approach — minus the proof. SOC Provider: “We use the same rules for all our clients.” Me: Because CNI and a bakery face the exact same threats, right? SOC Provider: “We don’t do fixed response times, but we’ll get to it ASAP.” Me: Translation: “When we get around to it, being responsive to you isn’t our priority.” SOC Provider: “You can’t talk to analysts directly — just check ticket updates.” Me: Perfect… for killing urgency, clarity and transparency. SOC Provider: “We update our threat intel when needed but we have hundreds of thousands of IOCs” Me: Which century are we defending against again? SOC Provider: “We only alert on critical or high alerts — lower priority ones aren’t important and are too noisy.” Me: Oh good, so we’re ignoring the early signs before they become a crisis.
