Just wrapped an incredible session with Google’s Retail Advisory Council, where CMOs from some of the world’s leading retailers - Target, Kohl’s, Sephora, Fanatics, and more - came together to discuss what’s next in retail. A few themes stood out loud and clear: - Quality > Quantity: Product feeds aren’t just plumbing—they’re brand. Images, descriptions, and video are now the front line of differentiation. - AI is the new workforce: We have a 24/7 team that never sleeps. The question isn’t if we’ll use AI agents across every function, but how fast we can build and scale them. - YouTube is the new prime time: Incremental TV reach still matters, but the next generation of brand building is happening on YouTube. - Personalization is non-negotiable: The industry is moving toward single-page, demand-led, fully personalized commerce experiences. My biggest takeaway? The future is here, it’s just not evenly distributed. Those who lean into AI, brand, and creative excellence today will set the pace for tomorrow. The most powerful person in retail isn't who you'd expect. After years in consumer goods, I've seen many brands focus on meetings with SVPs and C-suite executives, thinking that these title-holders are the gatekeepers to shelf space. But the truth is that buyers are the real decision-makers in retail. Each buyer manages their category like a mini-GM, with a lot of autonomy over their product assortment. They control substantial budgets and make independent decisions about which brands earn coveted shelf space. At tonies® USA, much of our business growth came from cultivating strong relationships with buyers who believe in our product. These professionals rarely get overruled by senior leadership, especially for emerging brands, because they have a deep understanding of market trends and customer needs. I believe that if brands want retail success, they should focus on: 🤝 Building genuine relationships with buyers (Go to those happy hours and have honest conversations!) 💡 Understanding their specific goals (Is it velocity? Exclusivity? Innovation?) 🏅 Making them look good to their organization (Help them achieve their targets and showcase their success to senior leadership!) I encourage brands planning their retail strategy to ask themselves: "Are we focusing on the right relationship?" Senior leaders matter, but they typically defer to their buyers' expertise. And the buyer managing the category where your product belongs is the person who can transform your retail presence.

Instacart just dropped strong Q2 results, stock is up. A few things that stand out to me:  📈 Ad revenue up 12% YoY. A Good signal for Q3.  🤝 40+ new retailers and they’re scaling off-platform with new/expanded partnerships (Pinterest and The Trade Desk). They're getting more retailers on board with same-as-in-store pricing  ✅ AI everywhere! Most brands still treat Amazon and TikTok Shop as afterthoughts. That’s ass backwards. 🍑 These are the channels that drive real velocity. Sales that builds momentum, not just impressions. At DUDE Wipes, Sean Riley always preaches about thinking like an omnichannel team player. The smartest moves grow the BRAND, not just one channel. We didn’t chase every retailer at once. We built the right product, found the right audience, and dominated one vertical until we became the category king. Amazon wasn’t a “check the box” channel. TikTok Shop wasn’t a side experiment. They were growth engines. Once you own the digital shelf and social commerce, club and mass retail follow. Winning is about sequence. Crush one lane at a time. Build demand. Make retail come to you.
