Breaking News: Major Tariff Update! As our Chief Economist Jonathan Smoke feared, the “unthinkable” has happened. New automotive-specific tariffs of 25% on all imported vehicles are now in place, shaking up the automotive landscape. What does this mean? • Sales Surge: New-vehicle sales hit 1.59 million units in March, up 11% YoY and 30% from February, with consumers buying now to avoid the impacts of new tariff-affected inventory. • Inventory Impact: New-vehicle inventory rose to 2.67 million units in March, but days’ supply dropped to 71 due to strong sales. Likewise, used inventory fell to 2.15 million units with a 38-day supply. • Price Hikes: New tariffs will impact 80% of vehicles priced under $30,000. Expect prices to rise 10-15% for the most heavily impacted vehicles and 5% for others. Ford Motor Co. will begin requiring salaried employees to work in-person four days each week under a policy change effective Sept. 1. The Dearborn-based automaker told employees Wednesday about the office work policy change, which was first reported by Reuters. I’m not (necessarily) anti-auction. Auctions play an essential role in retail automotive. But when too much of a dealer’s inventory comes from the auction? It’s a straight-up net profit assassin. It’s inflating costs, adding ZERO value to the customer, and driving gross profits down for dealers.  If you want your used car department to grow, you have to stop doing the same thing month after month and expecting different results. Here’s what the top-performing used car operators are doing differently in 2025: They’re opening the funnel. Instead of waiting around for “perfect inventory” solutions to appear at the auction, they widen their acquisition strategy to include as many channels as possible, including: ✓ Their own instant cash offer campaigns  ✓ Effective outbound strategies  ✓ Sight unseen appraisals  ✓ Advanced service lane tech appraisals ✓ Buy-anywhere-from-anyone mentality The best used car retailers I know still use auctions. The difference is that they use auctions as a supplement, not their entire strategy. The difference is their complete discipline about WHAT to buy. (Only cars their customers WANT to buy) And most importantly... their core strategy is built around appraisal volume. Period. Because more appraisals = more acquisitions outside the auction lane. Which means fewer fees, faster sales turns, and higher gross profits for dealers. So yeah, I’m not anti-auction.  I’m just anti-auction first mentality.
