What a great time at LiveRamp's RampUp 2025. Predictably (don't just call it) Retail Media was a hot topic. It was great to hear from leaders in the space like those pictured below and learn about how other data owners are entering and thriving in the media ecosystem. Three things that really landed for me: 1. Think about the ecosystem you need to sustain your media offering and help it thrive. Other media channel partners, complementary data owners, the right tech stack are all part of your emergence and evolution. 2. There's also the internal ecosystem. Legal, privacy, data governance, stakeholders in your core business all need to buy into what you're doing. Ditch the media jargon and focus on the value you can create and the op and resourcing models needed to get there. 3. Everyone's still figuring it out. The rate of growth is staggering, the level of innovation is inspiring, smart people are working hard to build the tools that drive success and sustainability. But it's hard and requires collaboration (of all kinds!) to succeed. And of course a big thank you to our partners at LiveRamp and colleagues and industry peers who joined us. It was invaluable to spend time with you all as I continue to learn about the big unlocks coming for retail / commerce / loyalty media thanks to data collaboration.

MMM Analysts are often brilliant with data and statistics, but they can miss the nuances of how media is actually planned, bought, and optimized in the real world. On the other side, media planners and marketers understand channels and tactics deeply but may not have the data fluency to connect those decisions back to econometric models. The truth is, you cannot do great MMM without appreciating both sides. Media is not just another input in a dataset. How a channel is planned, the way budgets are phased, the impact of flighting, or the difference between GRPs and impressions - all of these details matter in how we build models and interpret results. Without that context, you risk building a technically sound model that doesn’t actually reflect the market reality. That’s when stakeholders lose trust, and the insights don’t stick.
