We spent our last night in China in (a very cold) Shanghai. Here are three areas I’ve been impressed with on this trip: 1️⃣ Factory Capabilities: From cutting-edge robotics to highly manual and labor intensive processes, there is such a breadth of capabilities here. You can literally make anything. Add an incredibly sophisticated logistics infrastructure and it’s clear that China will remain the world’s manufacturing hub for many years to come, regardless of what tariffs US decides to implement. 2️⃣ Electric Vehicles: As the largest EV market in the world, China is a leader in driving the transition to EVs both for personal and commercial vehicles. Most our drivers here have EVs with autonomous driving capabilities. With innovations in battery technology and infrastructure, electric trucks, buses, and passenger cars are becoming the norm on its streets. 3️⃣ WeChat Ecosystem: Beyond messaging, WeChat has evolved into a super-app, integrating payments, e-commerce, business tools, and social networking. It’s a bit scary and big brother for sure, but also a glimpse into how technology can seamlessly integrate into every aspect of daily life. Verne Robotics is building robot arms that learn new skills in hours, not weeks. Founded in 2025, the San Francisco startup (part of Y Combinator latest batch) has developed state-of-the-art AI models for robotic control, enabling fast, flexible deployment without the months of engineering that traditional systems require. Its first product, Nemo3, is a bimanual robot with a 2.5-foot (0.8 m) reach and 4-lb (2 kg) payload capacity. Using diffusion models, Nemo3 converts just 30 minutes of teleoperation data into reusable skills, letting it adapt to new tasks (almost) on the fly. 📊 In practice, that means robots that can go from unboxing to production in days. Unlike rigid, hard-coded arms, Verne’s robots are drop-in, autonomous, and continuously learning, making them ideal for industries like biotech, meal kits, consumer goods, and logistics. The model also unlocks a new business approach: instead of massive upfront capex, Verne enables companies to pay by the hour for robotic labor. It's urgent. K-Scale Labs crosses $1M in sales within 72 hours of launch Early-stage robotics company K Scale Labs has reported $1 million in orders within the first three days of its commercial launch on July 1st. The sales figure represents 111 units of the company's K-Bot humanoid robotics platform. While the sector has been dominated by well-funded players like Tesla and Figure AI, K Scale's early traction demonstrates potential for alternative approaches in this market segment. We'll be watching to see whether this initial sales velocity can be sustained as the company moves from orders to production and delivery.
