The Center for Automotive Research has put a new price tag on the financial impact of President Donald Trump’s tariff regimen on the U.S. auto industry: $188 billion over the next three years. And CAR says that staggering number is probably a low estimate. That cost is not sustainable, helpful or absorbable, and it does nothing to aid one of the industry’s greatest challenges: vehicle affordability. To put the cost into perspective, that gigantic number is more than the combined market capitalization of General Motors, Ford Motor Company, Stellantis, Honda and Mazda ($178.7 billion). CAR’s update came this month during the industry research group’s annual Management Briefing Seminars, this year held in Detroit. China was the golden goose—offering massive growth, high sales volumes, and joint ventures that seemed like a win-win. But now, GM’s China strategy is crumbling, and new tariffs from the Trump administration will only accelerate the decline. 1. China No Longer Needs GM China’s auto industry has become an unstoppable force, now exporting over 6 million vehicles per year—up from just 1 million in 2020. With the capacity to build 40 million ICE cars and 25 million EVs by 2025, China is flooding global markets with low-cost, government-backed vehicles. Meanwhile, GM’s China market share has plummeted from nearly 15% in 2015 to below 9% today. China’s automakers, led by BYD and Nio, received massive subsidies, supply chain advantages, and direct government funding. GM, with its reliance on joint ventures, got locked out of the Chinese EV explosion. As China shifts to EVs, GM’s traditional strength—ICE vehicle sales—has eroded. The more EVs China sells domestically, the more unused ICE capacity they have to export globally, undercutting GM in emerging markets. Once, a foreign badge meant prestige in China. Now, homegrown brands dominate, pushing GM and Ford to the sidelines. 2. Trump’s Tariffs Will Cut Off U.S. Automakers at the Knees In a move meant to protect domestic auto manufacturing, Trump has announced 25% tariffs on Chinese auto imports, effective April 2025. But the reality? These tariffs will cripple U.S. automakers who depend on China in two major ways: GM and Ford Rely on China for Profits – While U.S. demand for new vehicles is cooling, automakers counted on China for sales. If China retaliates with tariffs of its own, GM’s exports to China will plummet, cutting off a crucial revenue stream. Increased Costs for U.S. Manufacturing – Many U.S. automakers still depend on Chinese-made components. Tariffs will drive up costs, forcing them to either eat the losses or pass them onto consumers—while Chinese automakers continue to export to non-tariffed markets freely. 3. GM and Ford Face an Existential Crisis China is exporting more EVs than ever, targeting key U.S. markets like Mexico and South America. Trump’s tariffs will raise costs for American automakers while giving Chinese firms a chance to strengthen their foothold in non-U.S. markets. Without access to a growing Chinese market or affordable components, GM and Ford will face even tighter margins, making layoffs and factory closures inevitable. The bottom line? GM and Ford bet on China to fuel their future. Now, that future is vanishing. China doesn’t need U.S. automakers anymore—but U.S. automakers still depend on China. Michael Dunne threw down a clear recommendation when prompted what advice he would have for the American auto OEM CEOs in the room. "Cut it in half."
