  • Reliably estimating the impact of an active control strategy in a building

    Journal of Building Engineering

In this paper, we developed a novel M&V method inspired by other research fields. The method applies to interventions that are easily switchable, such as control strategies. It uses a switchback design that randomly switches building operation from baseline to intervention strategy at fixed time intervals. It uses a sequential testing procedure to analyze the collected measurements in an iterative process of evaluating pre-defined stopping criteria. Upon satisfying all criteria, the analyst…

Upon satisfying all criteria, the analyst reports estimated savings with an associated uncertainty range. We demonstrated the proposed method by estimating the energy savings of a control strategy developed by a software-as-a-service company in a case study building in Chicago, IL, USA.

  • Inductive Charging as a Range Extender for Battery Electric Vehicles

University of Michigan College of Engineering

Abstract: Adoption of electric vehicles has been hindered by the range anxiety due to the relatively low energy density of current battery technology, and relatively long charge times. Current vehicles have supplemented electric capabilities by including a range extending internal combustion engine that allows for extra range when the level of charge of the battery is low. In order to maintain all-electric capability and achieve longer ranges, without improving battery capacity, a range…

In order to maintain all-electric capability and achieve longer ranges, without improving battery capacity, a range extending charging system is needed. Inductive charging can be implemented for use while driving so that the vehicle can be charged while it is moving. Resonant inductive coupling is a promising method for this application. Resonant inductive power transfer has been demonstrated to perform better than conventional inductive coupling, with larger gaps between source and receiving coils. This method has been demonstrated at high efficiency, 50% or more, at distances at least equal to the diameter of the source coil.

  • How bidirectional V2X electric vehicle charging can lead to net carbon savings

    Fermata Energy whitepaper

Our analysis of the correlation between hourly electricity prices and grid carbon intensity in US grid regions shows that the correlation is not sufficient to use cost as a proxy for emissions. Policy design and technology can use more direct signals, like marginal emissions or renewable curtailment, to realize the full value of EV bidirectional charging (V2X).

As building electrification advances, decarbonization is increasingly dependent on the electricity grid’s transition to zero carbon. But as the grid evolves to have more renewables, there are more occasions when solar and wind are turned off and wasted to keep the grid in balance. An existing building was converted to a grid-interactive building in this case study to demonstrate that the building’s HVAC system could shift load based on a forecast of upcoming wasted renewable energy. This approach reduced emissions and helps creates favorable market conditions for new solar and wind to be built, further accelerating the zero-carbon transition.

Fan arrays (or fan walls) are a new approach to air handlers that use off-the-shelf technologies in an innovative way, tied together with advanced controls. These systems’ benefits include a small footprint, redundancy, controllability and efficiency. Fan arrays (or fan walls) are a new approach to air handlers that use off-the-shelf technologies in an innovative way, tied together with advanced controls. These systems’ benefits include a small footprint, redundancy, controllability and efficiency. In this case study, the owner of a 125,000sf medical office building in Modesto, CA defined their project requirements and explored investment options for replacing very large, heavy vane axial fans that were at risk of failure. Four fan arrays were constructed and commissioned in early 2019. This project shows how proactive replacement with fan arrays was an intelligent choice, taking a costly risk off the table and improving the efficiency, resiliency and ease of use of the air handler. The speaker reviews critical design and commissioning elements and shares lessons learned that will help others avoid potential pitfalls and prepare for similar projects.
