AI in Orthodontics – Are We Creating Better Treatments or More Standardized Care? AI and machine learning are becoming increasingly prevalent in orthodontics. By leveraging vast amounts of data, algorithms can analyze past treatment outcomes, predict tooth movements, and propose optimal solutions. Efficient, yes – but what happens when AI’s decision-making is based on normal distribution, where the needs of the majority shape the direction? Orthodontics is more than just statistics. We work with individuals, where every jaw structure, malocclusion, and facial profile has unique characteristics. An AI-driven treatment plan may provide a recommendation based on what works most often – but does it truly see what we see? Consider this example: A patient has a subtle irregularity in their bite that AI suggests should be corrected. However, we understand that this variation is not just aesthetically significant – it may be essential for the patient’s function and long-term stability. AI detects a deviation from the norm, while we see a biological and functional whole. The key question is: Can big data ever help us fully understand what makes each individual unique, or does it push us toward more standardized treatments? If AI-driven treatment planning becomes the dominant approach, do we risk losing the nuances of personalized care in favor of more uniform outcomes? Will patients be treated based on what is statistically optimal rather than what is truly best for them as individuals? The technology is powerful, and the potential is enormous – but we must continually ask ourselves: Is it the patient or the algorithm that determines what is right? This is just one aspect of AI’s many applications in orthodontics but maybe the most critical. Dental Anesthesia: No Backup. No Standards. No Excuse. The same medications. The same patient risk. But no consistent rules across states—and that’s a growing liability. Just read a 2025 study by Kara Barnett et al, published in the Journal of Patient Safety that reviewed dental anesthesia regulations across all 50 states. The findings? Disturbing. - No universal definitions for sedation - Inconsistent monitoring requirements - Adverse event reporting is optional—or nonexistent -"One-provider" model means the dentist sedates and operates -Some states don’t even require capnography As a pain and anesthesia expert, this is alarming. This isn’t just a clinical concern—it’s a clear pathway to litigation. Because here's the truth: 👉🏾 The human body doesn’t care whether anesthesia is given in a dental chair or an OR. 👉🏾 But the legal and regulatory standards? Wildly inconsistent. If a dental patient crashes mid-procedure— Who’s documenting vitals? Who’s escalating care? What are the training requirements of the person giving the anesthesia?
