In just a matter of weeks, speculation around a US Foods–Performance Food Group (PFG) merger has shifted from rumor to public acknowledgment. During its second-quarter earnings call, US Foods CEO David Flitman confirmed that the company has approached PFG to explore a potential combination, highlighting the strategic benefits such a merger could bring. While discussions are still in the early stages, the very fact that these talks are underway signals forward momentum in an industry poised for significant change. If successful, this merger could create a distribution powerhouse with combined annual revenues estimated between $70 billion and $96 billion, depending on sources and potential adjustments. IFMA notes the figure at roughly $70.4 billion, while other analyses put the combined revenues closer to $96 billion. Either way, this represents a scale that would surpass Sysco’s U.S. footprint and signal a dramatic shift in the industry. Whenever change of this magnitude accelerates, it opens doors. The FDA just extended the Food Traceability Rule compliance date by 30 months, and I have some thoughts. Many industry experts misunderstand this regulation's core purpose. It's NOT about making recalls more efficient. It's about giving investigators the tools to solve foodborne illness outbreaks in real time; ending outbreaks and preventing unnecessary economic fallout due to commodity or segment-wide advisories. Having conducted numerous traceback investigations during my government service, I've experienced firsthand how the absence of lot code information creates multiple "investigation legs" of the traceback that can delay critical public health interventions. What's often overlooked? Lot-level traceability isn't just a regulatory "burden" — it can be a business advantage. Companies implementing these systems can realize improved inventory management, system automation, streamlined operations, and data-driven insights that enhance decision-making across the supply chain. Some will view this extension as permission to pause compliance efforts or lobby against lot-level traceability. But I see it differently. As a proud U.S. manufacturer of Better-for-You food ingredients—grown across North America and processed in Kentucky—this is the reckoning we've been preparing for all along. It’s a good thing our capacity expansion is already in progress. There are so many implications surrounding this lawsuit. It could get tossed out for any number of reasons the defense brings forward, but Big Food companies know this issue isn’t going away anytime soon. And sometimes, public perception can be just as damaging and costly as a class action that doesn’t go their way. I keep hearing that Ultra Processed Foods (UPF) make up anywhere from 50% to 70% of what Americans eat. But what portion of a major Food conglomerate’s offerings fall into that UPF category, and what will those companies do once their leadership acknowledges the fork in the road ahead? They might fight or reformulate—or, more likely, a bit of both. Ultimately, increased awareness will keep driving changes in consumer behavior. We’ll also see the cost of cheap foods creep up closer to that of whole foods and products that prioritize healthier ingredients. For people already trying to reduce UPF intake and eat more whole foods, that price gap may not feel as dramatic—and could encourage wider adoption. Of course, food won’t get cheaper in the process, but in the context of better overall health and fewer diet-related illnesses, it might be a net positive. After all, spending on preventative measures (like healthy foods) can be more sustainable than paying for costly treatments down the line. ⌚ing this one closely.
