𝐌𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐬 𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐧 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 One of the most effective leaders I worked with did the opposite — and built a top-performing team. 𝐉𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐞 𝐆𝐨𝐧𝐳𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐳 was the Area VP at Beckman Coulter. Under his leadership, our region was consistently ranked #1 in the nation. He had a rare talent: he hired based on potential, not just resumes. While competitors were hiring reps with IVD or capital equipment experience, Jorge recruited from B2B companies like Lanier and ADP. These weren’t “industry insiders,” but they had grit, strong sales training, and a hunger to win. Two standout examples: • 𝐊𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐧 𝐊𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐚, who came from Lanier and later became VP of Sales at Beckman • 𝐉𝐢𝐦 𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐬, also from Lanier — ranked #1 in the nation for much of his 30-year sales career, despite not having a college degree Jorge believed skills could be taught — but drive, character, and coachability couldn’t. Yes, for relationship-driven roles (such as oncology, cardiovascular, and orthopedic sales), industry experience is crucial. But for territory-level field sales, hiring for potential can be a smarter bet. Don’t overlook someone just because they haven’t sold your product. Look for someone who has the mindset to dominate your market.

𝗧𝘄𝗼 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻 𝗘𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗿𝗲  𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗻𝘁. 𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗚𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁  𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗡𝗲𝘅𝘁? A product support specialist told me something that should concern every equipment manufacturer: "I'm a business development manager, but I spend 50% of my time diagnosing machines because our tech hotline doesn't know the products well enough." Think about that. A sales role. Doing technical support. Because nobody else can. This is what happens when companies don't invest in knowledge transfer: → Top performers get trapped doing work below their pay grade → Customers suffer from inconsistent support → The company becomes dangerously dependent on 1-2 people → Those people eventually burn out and leave He even said: "There's myself and one other guy in North America that we're the go-to guys." 𝙏𝙬𝙤 𝙥𝙚𝙤𝙥𝙡𝙚.... 𝙁𝙤𝙧 𝙖𝙣 𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙧𝙚 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙣𝙩... 🤯 The real kicker? When he was in the after-sales role, he kept telling management: "You guys got to fix this." They never did.
