Two pieces of hard-won advice from a founder who’s built multiple $10B+ businesses. Last week, I was at the Goldman Sachs Builders & Innovators Summit. I cannot share names (Chatham House Rules), but one founder’s perspective stuck with me. 1. Pitch no. 100 like it’s no. 1 Early in his career, he sold encyclopedias door-to-door. Dozens of rejections a day. His lesson? Show up to pitch 100 with the same energy and conviction as pitch 1. Resilience is not just persistence. It is consistency, enthusiasm, and the ability to persevere in the face of defeat. 2. Build for return visits, not one-time sales One sale is a transaction. Repeat sales are a relationship. His goal was never to “close” a customer; it was to deliver so much value they chose to come back. When that happens, you are no longer selling. You are simply taking orders. At Zocdoc, I have learned that building something meaningful is rarely about big moments. It is about getting knocked down 1,000 times and standing up 1,001. It is about solving real problems, delivering value repeatedly, and doing it well enough that people choose to come back. That is what it takes to build something that lasts.

YouTube did not reach mainstream adoption until we moved from dialup internet to broadband. The technology was ready, but the infrastructure was not. The same thing is happening with AI in business today. What is holding companies back is not the accuracy of the models or the brilliance of the orchestration, but the infrastructure and readiness behind it. As we study companies applying AI to achieve operating leverage, those investing in their data maturity and infrastructure are the ones seeing measurable results. Once the foundation is strong, AI applications become the easy part. It always comes back to data and distribution. That is where the real differentiation lies. The AI application is quickly becoming the commodity.

Thinking about raising venture capital? Be honest with yourself first. VC isn’t just money—it’s a commitment to build a billion-dollar business. It means doing whatever it takes to win. So when I hear people say you can raise venture and still have "work-life balance"... I just don’t buy it. Let’s look at the facts: 💡 Your odds of building a $1B+ company? 0.00006%. 💡 You’re competing in the Olympics of Business. 💡 But do you think Olympic gold medalists train half the time and still win? To me, that’s delusional. I don’t think I’m 2x more talented than everyone else… so I can’t work 40 hours when my competitors are working 80. If that sounds crazy, don’t raise VC. Bootstrap your company. Work 9-5. Keep your balance. But if you’re playing to win at the highest level? You already know what it takes. Story time. A decade or so ago we participated in an RFP for a really cool project. Very game changing. Would have resulted in more than $3m in new revenue - a nice win for a mid sized company like FCR at the time, but even more importantly it would have added a new disruptor to our client base. Needless to say we did not get the business and never really had a chance. Even after we spent $70k crafting the RFP, hosting the team at our facilities, and I flew all the way across the country into a blizzard with a head cold to pitch FCR to the RFP team. Now here’s my opinion after responding to thousands upon thousands of RFPs over my career. If you don’t already have the business, don’t bother with the RFP. It’s that simple. You will not win the business unless you commoditize your price so low you can't make money. By the time it has moved to RFP, a vendor has already been chosen…it’s just not you. Why? For these 3 reasons: 1. If you didn’t write it, you will lose. Either a consultant or the other vendor wrote it. 2. If you don’t know the decision maker, you will lose. Another vendor knows that person already and has tailored their response to them. 3. If you don’t have direct access to the decision maker, you will lose. It’s a guarantee that at least one other vendor is in direct talks with the decision maker. It’s just not you. HOWEVER, as with anything, there is an exception to the rule, and that is if you already own the business. Should you already own it, most likely all of those other companies participating should be reviewing the above.
