The Mercy Health - The Jewish Hospital (Cincinnati, Ohio) is deepening its collaboration with local fire departments and EMS teams by providing hands-on simulation training both on-site and in the hospital’s simulation lab. Using advanced manikins and real-world scenarios, these sessions help first responders practice critical skills in a safe environment before transitioning to fieldwork. Most recently, new EMTs from the Cincinnati Fire Department trained in the simulation lab on Aug. 11, reinforcing readiness for frontline emergency care. In addition to hosting teams, staff frequently bring training directly to local firehouses, further strengthening partnerships and community ties. Community engagement efforts also extend beyond training. Team members have been active at events like the Warren County Night Out in South Lebanon, helping raise awareness of Mercy Health - Kings Mills Hospital and showcasing a shared commitment to improving access to care.

🧼 Infection Control in EMS: We Still Have Work to Do Hospitals have infection control down to a science: 🧤 Clean techniques 🧼 Isolation signage 📋 PPE compliance 🧴 Readily available supplies EMS? Not so much. In the field, it’s easy to justify cutting corners: • We pre-tear tape for speed—then apply it near an IV site with exposed adhesive • We forget to change gloves after cleaning a stretcher—then touch clean sheets or monitors • We toss dirty gear back into the jump bag without thinking twice But here’s the thing: our shortcuts follow the patient. Contamination in the truck doesn’t stay in the truck. It goes into trauma bays, into patient rooms, and onto clean hospital linens. And yes—we’ve all been guilty of it at some point. This isn’t about blame. It’s about raising the standard. Here’s how EMS can do better: ✅ Remove dirty gloves before touching anything clean ✅ Don’t pre-tear tape unless it stays sterile ✅ Disinfect equipment between every patient ✅ Use a clean barrier when placing monitors or bags on surfaces ✅ Stop bringing field germs into sterile spaces Infection control isn’t just for the hospital. It starts at the curb.
