Tableau Tip: Tableau Table Extension! It feels so great to be back to sharing Tableau Tips! This week, I explored the Tableau Table Extension, one of two current available viz extensions built by Tableau. Though I will not be using the table extension for personal projects due to limitations on table stylization, this extension is 100% perfect for most business use cases. Why? This new extension allows you to build tables with which many Excel/ Google Sheets users are familiar! When I started teaching data visualization, I focused on: - Chart types - Color theory - Design principles - Technical tools But my students weren't creating better visualizations. Then I changed my approach. Before any visualization, I now ask: 1. Who needs to understand this? 2. What decisions will they make? 3. What information matters most? 4. What might confuse them? 5. How can we make it clearer? The result? Simpler visuals Better understanding Actual decisions made Because visualization isn't about making data pretty. It's about making meaning clear.

Client: “I want a dashboard that does XYZ.” Analyst: “Okay. What are your KPIs?” Me: 🚩 Red flag. Stop right there. You’re already solving before you understand. Who said the client needs a dashboard? ↳ Maybe they need clarity. ↳ Maybe they need control. ↳ Maybe they just need to feel progress again. Ask better questions. Find the real frustration hiding under the surface. If you listen well, the pain points will tell you what to build ↳ and sometimes, what not to build. Your time and energy are your currency. Spend them where they create value, not noise. Because being busy isn’t a badge of honor. It’s often a sign you’ve stopped thinking. Whether you’re an intern, a volunteer, or a full-time staff, ↳ your relevance is measured by impact, not effort. ______ PS: Not every problem is a pain point. ↳ But impact always hides where the pain is. ______
