I see a lot of D2C brands running ads with multiple communication angles. Here’s what they miss: A brand can acquire customers through two routes: 1. Gain share from competition 2. Expand the category by bringing in new users For low market share / newer brands in competitive categories: The lower hanging fruit is almost always stealing share from competitors. That means being crystal clear on: Why should someone pick your brand over an existing one? What’s the differentiation?(Product superiority, better efficacy, convenience, delivery method, pricing advantage, etc.) For category leaders: Expanding the category (educating consumers, increasing usage frequency, building the pie) makes sense because they benefit most when the category grows. If you’re a challenger brand, don’t waste ad spends on “category education.” Instead, focus on positioning and differentiation to win customers who are already in the category but open to switching for something better. Your objective (share gain or category expansion) should define your creative messaging. How do you balance differentiation vs category growth messaging in your ads?

Nonbrand search is the core of most paid search accounts - and the biggest initial growth opportunity. These keywords can be expensive, but you are targeting users that are already deep into their research phase and are very likely to buy.
