Most data teams are wasted on dashboards. If that’s all they’re building, you don’t have a data team. You have a support desk. Most companies treat data like an internal helpdesk: → “Build me a dashboard for X.” → “Can you pull numbers on Y?” → “We need a weekly report for Z.” This turns analysts into order-takers, not problem-solvers. The best teams I’ve worked with operate differently: ✅ They challenge the questions being asked ✅ They surface uncomfortable truths departments don’t want to hear ✅ They focus on business outcomes, not pretty charts ✅ They say “no” to vanity metrics, “yes” to leading indicators Example: → Marketing requests a campaign performance dashboard. → Report generator builds it. → Truth seeker asks: - “What is the problem you are trying to solve?" - "How would you action the data?” → Instead of following orders, they focus on solving the problem. Often the problem isn’t missing data. It’s missing clarity on what success looks like. Your data team should be neutral ground: → Revenue drops get investigated, not explained away. → Assumptions get tested, not assumed. → Truth outranks comfort. Why Do So Many Data Analytics Projects Miss the Mark? From my first Data/Analytics conference (let’s not date it!) to today, one lesson keeps coming up: “Data Analytics must move the needle for the business.” It’s not rocket science. In fact, it’s a bit of a “D’uh—of course!” moment. If analytics isn’t making a difference, what’s the point? So why do so many analytics investments still fail? Simple: We don’t practice what we preach. It’s easier to chase shiny tech (AI, metaverse, data mesh—we just can’t get enough!) than tackle the hard stuff: changing human behavior, understanding processes, and solving the right problems. For analytics teams to succeed, we need to start by picking the right problems. In healthcare, it’s all about better patient care at a lower cost. That mission should trickle down to every function: - Clinical Care: Improve patient outcomes by reducing readmissions, managing chronic conditions, and addressing social determinants of health. - Rev Cycle: Reduce leakage, improve claim accuracy, and accelerate cash flow. - Managed Care: Optimize payer contracts, reduce denials, and improve risk adjustment accuracy. Once we nail the problem, the real work begins: 1️⃣ Map the end-to-end process—humans, systems, and all the messy interactions. 2️⃣ Go beyond surface-level requirements to uncover insights that drive decisions. 3️⃣ Build solutions that align with business goals, operational realities, and human constraints. Is it a lot of work? Yes. Impossible? No. But it requires a value mindset—and a commitment to becoming a business expert first, and a technologist second. At the end of the day, data analytics isn’t about the tech. The gap between analytics vendor demos and reality: Vendor demo: "Just connect to your data and drag and drop fields to create instant insights!" Reality: - Three weeks getting security approval to access data sources - Additional three weeks getting security approval to access additional data sources (not known at time of project start) - Discovering your data is spread across 20 different systems - Realizing nobody knows what half the fields actually mean - Learning that crucial business logic isn't stored anywhere - Building complex transformations the demo magically skipped - Creating a data model that doesn't collapse under basic questions - Handling exceptions and edge cases you never knew existed - Re-doing everything when requirements suddenly change - Re-doing everything again when metrics definitions change The software isn't lying about its capabilities. It's just assuming a level of data readiness most organizations don't have.
