According to sources, Paul Weiss chair Brad Karp spoke to partners in a Monday meeting attended by dozens of litigation partners, hoping to clarify what he said was a bombardment of "misinformation." The meeting came after a new spinoff firm, founded by former Paul Weiss partners Karen Dunn and Jeannie Rhee, among others, continued to recruit attorneys from the firm. According to sources, Karp told partners at the Monday meeting that the lawyers who have left, including several income partners and associates, largely worked together as a group, first at Boies Schiller Flexner, and were a "siloed unit" at Paul Weiss. The spinoff firm—Dunn Isaacson Rhee—is a litigation boutique specializing in high-stakes trials, investigations and crisis management. Among those who are known to be moving to the firm, some came from Boies Schiller to Paul Weiss within months of Dunn in 2020. Meanwhile, boutique partners Rhee and Rush Atkinson worked with special counsel Robert Mueller to investigate Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election. A spokesperson for the boutique said about 19 former and current Paul Weiss lawyers have joined or are joining the firm, with more lawyers expected to join. Despite the exits, Karp told partners during the Monday meeting that Paul Weiss "has never been healthier" and the firm continues to represent the most important clients in the world on their most important matters. Five months into the year, Paul Weiss is running 25% to 35% ahead of last year, he said Monday. The firm set records for profitability and revenue in 2024.
