The riskiest messaging? The kind written in a vacuum. I’m deep in messaging mode right now. Which means I’m doing a lot of listening. We’re shifting some big pieces of our brand narrative, and before we roll anything out, I want to make sure it actually resonates. Not just internally, but with the people it’s meant for. So I’m pressure testing in two ways: ✅ One-on-one conversations with execs from our customer advisory board—mostly CMOs. I walk them through a few problem statements and our value prop, then listen for what’s clear, what’s fuzzy, and what makes them pause. ✅ Panels of people who aren’t customers yet but match our ideal audience. I use tools like usertesting.org to get raw, unfiltered reactions from the outside. And how do I know when we’ve got it? When I can predict their reaction before they say it. Retention isn't just a metric - it's a mindset. 99%+ retention rate doesn't grow on trees. When Matt O' Boyle transitioned from Intercom to Userpilot as Head of Customer Success, he quickly realized that to drive meaningful retention, we needed more than just product engagement & CS tools, CSMs and good intentions - we needed a plan.
