And these aren’t surface-level demos.... We dive into real use cases, engineer effective prompts, and sometimes even write JavaScript to power the experience. I was always impressed by the research that Elizabeth Boling did on how well people understand illustrations, in particular, how well they understand the graphical devices like arrows that we add to illustrations to enhance meaning. Spoiler alert: Not very well. Images are inherently open to multiple interpretations. So there can be a pretty big discrepancy between the intended meaning of a visual that an instructional designer creates and the perceived meaning by the learner. I spoke to Dr. Boling a few years ago about this and she suggests some strategies for improving the intended meaning of visuals: 1. Introduce education about graphic creation and interpretation much earlier in schools to improve visual literacy. 2. Do rigorous testing with diverse populations to ensure that visual symbols are universally understood and do not lead to misinterpretations. (In some contexts, misinterpretations can cause harm.) 3. Use text to augment visual symbols to help clarify their meanings. 4. Consider how symbols are likely to be perceived in different cultural and situational contexts. (I remember when I discovered that a thumbs up symbol is insulting in some cultures. That was the end of thumbs up.) 5. Provide learners with a pre-explanation or a guide on the visual language used in specific educational or training materials, like you see in textbooks. PDF Accessibility – An Overlooked Barrier in Learning Content. At eLaHub, we often find PDFs uploaded to the eLearning courses we audit. Many of them contain accessibility barriers impacting learners with disabilities and access needs who use screen readers, magnification, or text-to-speech tools etc. Because PDF accessibility can be so challenging for L&D teams I recommend checking out this hugely useful guidance on PDF accessibility. Inspired by something I saw posted to LinkedIn this week, I've devised a new and effective method of integrating the Storyline 360 seekbar with a custom GSAP animation timeline. Both start and end points for the GSAP motion effects are plottable anywhere on the slide timeline using variables. Every time, I end up writing help docs, recording videos, and running training sessions. Why? How to create learning materials that actually stick. Richard Mayer's principles are the secret sauce. 🧠💡 Most eLearning falls flat. Here's how to fix that: 1. Dual-channel processing → Combine visuals + audio → Don't overload one channel 2. Less is more → Cut the fluff → Focus on what matters 3. Highlight what's important → Use cues (bold, arrows, etc.) → Guide learner attention 4. Words + pictures > words alone → But don't repeat on-screen text → Let visuals do the heavy lifting 5. Keep it close → Text near relevant graphics → Reduce cognitive load 6. Timing is everything → Sync words and visuals → Present simultaneously 7. Bite-sized is best → Break content into chunks → Let learners set the pace 8. Build a foundation → Intro key concepts first → Then dive deeper 9. Audio > on-screen text → Free up visual processing → Use narration wisely 10. Keep it conversational → Ditch the corporate speak → Talk like a human 11. I hear the same frustrations from both sides: “Our faculty don’t enjoy working with instructional designers. They prefer to build their own courses.” “Our instructional designers do what they can, but faculty won’t engage.” At first glance, these sound like separate issues. But they’re really the same problem—a disconnect in expectations, roles, and collaboration. When faculty and instructional designers don’t work together effectively, everyone loses. Students get confusing assignments and disengaging course structures. Faculty spend more time answering emails than focusing on teaching. Institutions miss the chance to improve retention and course success. Can I say the quiet part out loud? Here’s it goes: When you only teach or learn the textbook definition of instructional design and the “proper” instructional design process, you’re setting yourself (and others) up for failure. Allow me explain. A few months ago, a new ID scheduled a coaching call with me. After the usual introductions, this person suddenly broke down into a literal ugly cry and confessed how disappointed they were with themselves for having “become an order taker.” After helping them catch their breath, I started asking questions. Pretty quickly, it became clear they were working on…a pretty average L&D team, with pretty average projects. But that’s not how they saw it. They felt like a failure because not every project started with a needs analysis. They felt like a failure because not every project had perfectly crafted learning objectives. They felt like a failure because their eLearning was full of bullet points and legal jargon. They felt like a failure because the only evaluation was a Level 1 survey at the end. I chuckled…not at them, but at the impossible standards we sometimes create for ourselves in this industry. I explained: You haven’t failed. You’re just experiencing the reality of most L&D teams…messy, imperfect, and political. This was news to them. Here’s the thing: Being a good instructional designer (and keeping your sanity) isn’t about strict, dogmatic allegiance to adult learning theories or the five steps of ADDIE. It’s about knowing when to flex between strategic order taker mode and badass instructional designer mode. We don’t talk enough about how corporate politics affects our ability to do the job the “textbook” way. Whether you can push back on a request often depends on who’s asking and how much political leverage they have. And frankly, it’s not the job of individual contributor instructional designers to fix order taking within their L&D team…the buck stops with the leadership team and the culture they’re creating and allowing to exist. In my experience, the most unhappy and frustrated (and often unsuccessful) instructional designers are the ones who cling to process purity at their own expense—ignoring the fact that some strategic order taking can be a necessary evil to build trust, earn influence, and eventually shape better solutions. So yeah…being a good instructional designer means knowing when to be a good order taker, and how to play the game of corporate politics. What do you think?
