“I have known Mark Kommers, since 2015 when I joined the Conmed US mgt team, as he worked for our largest US distributor (Midwest Medical) under my guidance. Mark quickly emerged as an one of Conmed's very best upwardly-mobile territory managers in style, substance and results, and in spoken word and action. As a manager, Mark is so "strong on the ball" both clinically and tactically with his reps, spending lots of time, shoulder to shoulder with them, "between the red lines of the Operating Room" as well as prosecuting our value with upper mgt of surgery centers and hospitals. As a rep or as a manager, Mark is focused on gaining product adoption and taking market share from our robust competitors. What sets Mark apart from 95% of his peers is his unique ability to become a master in his product line! More importantly, Mark became a very effective teacher and coach in leading his team to great sales results. Mark was able to master and dominate our sports tissue product line. This led to better access and stronger sales revenue with the rest of Conmed's orthopedic product portfolio. In 2017/18/19 Mark played a vital role in teaching the entire sales force how to sell our MTF product line. He was our regional MVP during that time!! Mark is a tireless sales manager, possessing the one thing that all of us executive managers are looking for---DEDICATION! This, along with his DNA-imbedded strong will-to-achieve in everything he does (Faith, Family, Career) makes Mark an extremely valuable salesperson and sales manager in the medical device space. Are you hiring the right sales reps? I've been reviewing job descriptions for medical device reps lately, and here's what I keep seeing: "Must have 5+ years in [specialty X]. Strong existing physician relationships required." Here's the thing - many are still hiring like it's 2010. The best reps today can walk into a physician's office and say, "Based on these referral patterns and your patient mix, here's an opportunity you're missing." They don't just know people—they know how to interpret market data to identify growth patterns and prioritize prospects based on actual potential vs. just who is the highest volume. I pulled together a job description template that actually calls out and attracts this type of rep. One that values curiosity and continuous learning alongside relationships. What makes this JD different then all the ones I have been looking at lately? - It explicitly calls for strategic, data-driven territory analysis thinking and skills - It asks for examples of using insights to drive strategic conversations - It recognizes that territory knowledge means understanding market dynamics, patient movement, payer dynamics, etc. Not just knowing doctors and your product. Can a sales training program grow sales by more than 10%? Yes, it can. I made it happen! Attendance, satisfaction, and knowledge retention are standard sales metrics. In reality, how strategic are they? Training that truly drives impact isn’t about attendance. It’s about performance. And strategic training starts with one simple question: How does this make our salespeople better equipped to drive results? To get there, we need to balance two worlds: senior leadership, who see the business direction, and sales force, who live the customer reality. Real change happens when both voices shape the same solution. I’ve seen what happens when I drove this alignment intentionally. I proved something simple yet powerful: when learning is strategic, there is a direct and measurable impact in sales. In my example, sales grew by 11% in just one year.
