Who Really Owns the U.S. Debt? As of 2023, total U.S. debt stands at $34.4 trillion, and the breakdown reveals that the overwhelming majority is held domestically—a full $26.4 trillion, or nearly 77% of the total. Key takeaways: • The Federal Reserve alone holds $5.2 trillion (15%), largely through its Treasury purchases tied to monetary policy • U.S. mutual funds, depository institutions, pension funds, and households (through savings bonds) make up a significant share • Intragovernmental debt, amounting to $7.0 trillion (20%), is owed by the U.S. government to its own agencies like Social Security and federal retirement funds Only $7.9 trillion, or 23%, is held internationally, with: • Japan as the largest foreign holder at $1.1 trillion (3%) • China notably declining to $820 billion (2%) • and other countries collectively holding $5.3 trillion (15%) This composition explains why the U.S. can sustain high debt levels—much of it is essentially held “in-house.” But it also underscores geopolitical shifts, with foreign holdings by strategic rivals like China steadily shrinking in favor of other reserve assets such as gold. Crown Partners' March ABL report tracks the $2.5 billion in announced ABL transactions in our market last month. We saw announcements from each of the "large" private credit ABL lenders - including Eclipse Business Capital, LLC, MidCap Financial, Wingspire Capital, White Oak Global Advisors, and SLR Credit Solutions. [Ares Commercial Finance LP rarely announces their transactions which keeps them largely out of our data set unfortunately] Two notes: Eclipse Business Capital, LLC continues to push up the max hold size in the non bank market with this month's $160 million commitment, following a $265 million hold in January. Crown hopes this trend continues as we work to educate middle market sponsors on enhanced liquidity options for their portfolio companies vs. the traditional bank ABL market. As of 5 years ago, max hold sizes in non-bank were ~$90 million.
