It has been enlightening to read works by Jin Li, Professor of Education and Human Development at Brown University, who writes about "East Asian virtue-oriented and Western mind-oriented learning models." In her new book, Li contrasts Western philosophy's focus on being, beings, ways to study beings by breaking them into smaller pieces, and East Asian philosophy's emphasis on becoming (Confucius's notion of becoming "fully human" and junzi). In one concrete example, Li interprets the phenomenon of many East Asian students being silent in US classrooms. Instead of regarding students as being passive, Li points out that speaking carries a heavy weight from East Asian perspectives (Li, 2025; see the quote below). Students are becoming savvier consumers when it comes to postsecondary education. In an AEI report published earlier this month, I documented that low-quality colleges are seeing massive declines in enrollment. But there trends in consumer choice extend to what students elect to study once they arrive on campus. Increasingly, students are majoring in subjects with higher typical salaries. The number of degrees conferred in fields of study where the median early-career salary exceeds $60,000 grew by 60 percent between 2010 and 2023. This accounted for almost all the rise in bachelor’s degree attainment during that time period. Some college majors saw even faster growth. In particular, computer science has witnessed an explosion in student interest. The number of bachelor’s degrees awarded in computer science tripled between 2010 and 2023. Other high-wage majors also posted impressive growth: the number of four-year degrees awarded in nursing increased 96 percent, and engineering degrees rose by 63 percent. In stark contrast to the lucrative majors, student interest in lower-earning majors has waned. The number of bachelor’s degrees awarded in English and linguistics declined 39 percent between 2010 and 2023. Other college majors with steep declines include history (down 38 percent), sociology and related social sciences (down 17 percent), and education (down 15 percent). How Does Generative AI Shape Creativity? My colleague Anil Doshi and I conducted an experiment to explore this question. We asked nearly 300 participants to write short stories under three scenarios: 1️⃣ No AI assistance (human-only). 2️⃣ One AI-generated idea provided as inspiration. 3️⃣ Up to five AI-generated ideas provided as inspiration. The results, published in Science Advances, raised a fascinating dilemma: 👉 Writers using AI ideas created stories that were more creative, engaging, and well-written, with the biggest gains seen in those who scored lower on initial creativity tests. 👉 Access to five AI ideas boosted story novelty and usefulness by about 12%, effectively levelling the playing field between less and more creative writers. But there’s a catch: AI-assisted stories tended to be more similar to one another, raising questions about originality and diversity of thought. 🤔 Our findings are not alone: Recent work in Organization Science by Léonard Boussioux, Jacqueline Ng Lane, Miaomiao Zhang, Vladimir Jacimovic, and Karim Lakhani finds that human creativity is often hard to beat, but some forms of AI-human collaboration (sequential prompting, encouraging more diversified responses) can be of more strategic and financial value. But the jury is still out on how we can tackle the following impact challenge: generative AI can amplify individual creativity, but how do we ensure it doesn’t come at the cost of collective innovation?
