There’s no question in my mind #AI will eventually supplement doctors in the realm of patient triage—taking case histories, assessing systems and suggesting appropriate care pathways. But a new study from researchers at Harvard and Stanford say existing models aren’t yet ready for prime time. While models—both open-source and proprietary—excel at medical exam-style multiple-choice tests, they perform significantly worse when asked to make diagnoses based on conversations that mimic unstructured, sometimes-messy real-world patient interactions. To correct this, researchers recommend designing and validating AI tools using open-ended questions, assessing models on their ability to ask the right probing questions and designing AI agents that can recognize nonverbal cues. This prompts an even more foundational question: How do we get physicians and healthcare workers to listen more deeply and probe more thoughtfully—to do the work that adds grist to the #genAI mill? The burgeoning field of narrative medicine goes to the heart of how we inculcate this art among physicians. It’s a skill that is never taught in medical school but is becoming fundamental to making the science of medicine successful.

The question of how to use AI responsibly in mental health is on my mind every day. At Calm, we’ve learned that technology works best in this space when it keeps people, not algorithms, at the center. I believe AI can be a powerful complement to therapy and human care, but it’s no substitute for them. Done right, it can help expand access and support our nation’s care system.
