Minnesota Law alumni Peter Michaud '97, chair of Ballard Spahr, and Barbara J. Duffy '89, recent president of Lane Powell, discussed the completion of a merger between Ballard Spahr and Seattle-based Lane Powell in an interview with the Star Tribune. In discussing the merger and building a presence in the Pacific Northwest, Michaud noted that while Ballard Spahr had clients in the Pacific Northwest, they didn't have a physical office space in the area. They also didn't have a lot of overlap in practice areas which both firms felt was a strength. Duffy says, "We built something very special at Lane Powell, and we were very strong, very profitable. Burr & Forman is moving beyond its Southeast U.S. base and expanding to Washington, D.C., and Chicago by adding four seasoned federal government contract attorneys, including a practice leader, from two firms. The Am Law Second Hundred firm added Dirk Haire and Sean Milani-nia from Fox Rothschild, and Jessica Haire—Dirk’s wife—from Thompson Hine, to open the firm’s first office in the nation’s capital. It also added Joseph Cohen from Fox Rothschild to open the firm’s first Chicago office. All were added as equity partners, Dirk Haire said in an interview. Charles Marshall, chief operating officer of Burr & Forman, said in an interview the firm decided to expand after seeing the “opportunity to get a core group of outstanding attorneys with proven practices.” He said the lawyers add a new area of focus—government contracting—within its construction and commercial litigation practices. They fit with the firm’s strategic plan “to be able to attract these types of lawyers,” he said. Province Firm, a financial advisory and restructuring firm headquartered in Las Vegas, has announced its acquisition of O'Keefe, a Detroit-based advisory firm specializing in complex financial and legal matters. This acquisition not only expands Province’s geographic footprint into the Midwest but also establishes a dedicated litigation advisory practice within the firm. Founded in 2001, O’Keefe offers services across strategic advisory, corporate finance, litigation support, and turnaround and restructuring. The firm is staffed by 16 professionals and has built a strong regional reputation for guiding companies and creditors through challenging business scenarios. Founder and CEO Pat O’Keefe emphasized that joining Province will enhance the firm's ability to deliver high-impact solutions to a broader client base. The acquisition marks Province’s first major move since being acquired by private equity firm Trivest Partners in July 2024. Province also announced two senior hires to bolster its leadership team: Tom Buck joins as a partner, and Manish Kumar as managing director. Both are based in New York and bring deep expertise in restructuring and forensic advisory, respectively. Buck has more than 25 years of experience in performance improvement and divestitures, while Kumar offers over 30 years of financial forensics and valuation expertise. Province was founded in 2008 and provides a broad suite of services including corporate advisory, creditor and investor services, trust and liquidation management, litigation support, and operational improvement. With over 115 employees, the firm operates offices in Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, and Greenwich, CT.
