Product Managers are you scared of tech? Imagine you watch a lot of live video content say sports content and you find it exciting and day dream about working in this field. Problem is you have no idea how live video streaming works. That is not the root problem, issue is you never paused to ask yourself how is something like this working. There is a very logical way of asking yourself questions that lays down a path to understanding any new topic including video streaming. If I would have to draw a parallel this is the Socratic way of understanding things. Let's see what these questions would be - 1. Who plays the video? like in the physical world what is it that actually plays the video. Once you think about this - you will realize you need a player (software) to play the video. 2. Since the video is being created at the same time at which it is being played - how do you play it? You will realize that you are probably playing only a video chunk at a time while the next video chunk gets created and gets delivered. This is the core of streaming protocols. 3. How would you play the video reasonably well in different internet speed environment? You will realize that probably the same video chunk will need to be delivered at different resolutions (in technical words bit rates). 4. How does the player display how much length of the video has been played. If you think about it you will realize that every video chunk is probably telling the player what its length is. Through this way you start building a logical mental model of approaching any new tech topic that you don't understand. Then you don't get lost in the weeds when you are looking to master a complex tech topic. You have a mind map, a master plan and then you are seeking specific information to fill the gaps. This helps in better understanding and better retention. If you’ve never worked in product management, you might think the job is about gathering requirements, prioritizing them, and sending them off for delivery—conveyor belt style. In reality, product management is an excruciatingly slow process that requires deep thinking, constant validation, data analysis, customer conversations, and endless stakeholder alignment. It’s easy to have an idea—“We need to build X!”—but for every idea (and trust me, we have plenty 😆), you’re looking at weeks of work at best, or months if it’s something more complex. And that’s before anyone even starts building it. That’s why great product managers are obsessed with ruthlessly saying NO—not because we’re difficult, but because the world is full of opportunities, and only a tiny fraction are truly worth building. So next time you hear a product manager say NO, don’t get frustrated. Instead, ask yourself: “What data can I bring to help them make this decision?”

A lot of people call PMMs just the “messaging people.” But in 2025, I believe that Product Marketing is so much more than that. Just take a look at some of the KPIs that PMMs are responsible for (credit goes to the Product Marketing Alliance for this great data!) Why? We used to write a message house and make some slides, and it hand it all off to sales and marketing. We hoped it worked. That’s not the job anymore. Today, PMM is a strategic GTM growth function—and a critical contributor to pipeline.We may not own demand, but we sit at the center of how it’s created. Here’s why this shift is happening: 💥 Product-led growth (PLG) blurred the lines between product, marketing, and sales. Product marketing sits in the center of this transformation. Instead of just making first call decks, PMMs must influence everything from product strategy to pricing narratives to upsell plays in order to be successful. 🎯 Launches = campaigns. PLG means that the most impactful campaigns are product/market launches. Our launches need to generate pipeline and are also critical to driving brand awareness. This puts PMM at the center of brand, demand generation, and lifecycle like never before. 📈 Growth metrics are now part of the PMM scorecard. Product marketers now need to closely monitor Pipeline influence, win rates, adoption curves. We’re being measured on impact, not just output. 💡 Storytelling still matters. But now it’s storytelling in service of $$$$. If your PMM team isn't working closely with revenue marketing—you’re missing a huge opportunity to drive growth.
