Zomato's monthly userbase - ~20 million Swiggy's monthly userbase - ~17 million Uber India's monthly userbase - ~17 million Cred's monthly userbase - ~13 million Declared income tax payers over 50 lakhs ($58k USD) are around 9 lakh (900,000). Another 24 lakh folks (2,400,000) earn over 20 lakh ($23k USD) . A further 69 lakh (6,900,000) people earn over 10 lakh ($12k USD). Now this is based on Income Tax Return data so evaluate these numbers as you will. So when you're building a startup, and I see TAM SAM SOM (god this sounds like a Thai Salad) showcasing over 3 crore paying users, my question is "Sure, where are you producing these folks from?" We've seen a ~500% growth in tax payers earning above 50 lakh from 2013 till 2024. Assuming even a similar trajectory, we've got 45 lakh folks by 2035. Still a bit short of 3 crore. Meanwhile, AI is most DEFINITELY impacting jobs, household debt sits at ~42% of GDP and inflation is high. Now none of this is meant to be discouraging. We've had a surge of brilliant brands rise in India, several which are making their way across the world today. Lenskart, Innovist, Mokobara, The Whole Truth, Blue Tokai, these are all part of my everyday usage, and I'm seeing them sold across the world. If you had told me this a decade ago, even I wouldn't have fully believed it was possible! The reason I'm writing this is to put out direct numbers. A founder who has spent 32 Years building IP-Owned Tech in India's Defense Sector. Ashok Atluri, Founder of Zen Technologies Limited shares a growth story bootstrapped from Hyderabad: -Revenue: ₹60 Cr (FY21) → ₹930 Cr(FY24) -Market cap: 40 Cr (2012-13) → 13000 Cr today -Growth: 400X in 12 years Takeaways from our conversation: 1. India historically imported 65–70% of its defense equipment. Today, defense exports have grown more than 30× over the past decade, with the private sector contributing around 60% of exports. Domestic defense production has increased to ₹1.27 lakh crore, a 174% rise since FY 2014–15. 2. For over two decades, Zen built advanced simulators but struggled to sell them in India because single-vendor bids weren’t accepted. The IDDM policy in 2015 gave preference to IP-owning Indian companies and allocated 75% of the capital acquisition budget to local sourcing. And decades of R&D became a real market worth ₹200 billion. 3. Defense tech startups in India have raised $184 million in VC funding since 2020. Zen’s journey shows that IP-owned Tech built with self-funded R&D can build the most defensible advantage, similar to how Apple captures value through IP rather than manufacturing. 4. Zen’s anti-drone systems were proven in field operations, leading to export inquiries from over 20 countries. This mirrors the broader trend of India’s defense exports growing from ₹1,940 crore (FY14) to ₹21,083 crore (FY24). Field-tested solutions build trust far faster than lab demos or pilot projects. 5. Government fundings are rewarding innovation over manufacturing. Programs like iDEX provide up to ₹10 crore for proven concepts, while DRDO offers ₹50 crore per system under the Technology Development Fund. This shift allows companies to reinvest profits into next-generation R&D. 6. Ashok believes that not all technologies should be patented. Highly secretive or complex innovations can be reverse-engineered if patented. Instead, patent what is obvious to outsiders to protect your competitive edge. 7. Build with a focused approach on Pareto technologies with maximum impact. Instead of chasing every opportunity, Zen concentrated on the 20% of technologies delivering 80% of results, anti-drone systems and simulators. Prioritizing high-leverage areas compounds impact effectively. 8. Time market entry around overlooked gaps: In 2018, drones were a hot topic, but there was little attention on anti-drone systems. Zen entered this gap and was ready when the need became urgent, from regional conflicts to domestic security. Opportunities often lie where others are silent. 9. Create policies around your innovation: Self-funded R&D firms face unique risks that conventional procurement rules often overlook. Zen advocated for new categories rather than adapting breakthrough technologies to unsuitable frameworks, ensuring their innovations could be evaluated on merit. Announcing a funding round of an AI portfolio company - MedMitra AI raises Rs 3 crore led by All In Capital & WEH Ventures. Healthcare isn’t an easy sector to build in. It’s slow-moving, highly regulated, and getting doctors to adopt new tech is a challenge in itself. But when we met Dr. Anushka Sharma and Shivangi Sharma, it was clear they weren’t just building another AI tool - they were solving a problem they had lived through. Anushka, a practicing doctor, saw first-hand how inefficient hospital workflows drain time and energy. Shivangi, coming from a family of doctors, knew the challenges all too well. What is their product? An AI-powered solution that helps doctors with disease diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. The doctors are happily paying a monthly subscription fee to use it. The funds will help them grow their team, scale AI development, and expand into new markets. Now how does the Deepseek development impact what they’re building? Since they are at the application layer, it’s just one more (cost-effective) option to evaluate They are still testing Deepseek, but it only strengthens their case for building on top of foundational models rather than competing with them. The way I see it - healthcare AI is still at Day 1. Excited to back a team that’s making it happen.

VC Diaries - 17 : Thanks to our Govt and Jio, we have built the world's best digital highways - the next unicorns will be the companies that teach India how to drive on them. For the last decade, we were rightly obsessed with building the India Stack and scaling it. We created the digital rails for identity, payments, and data. But we are now realising that building the infra was only half the job. The assumption that access automatically leads to confident adoption was flawed. The next frontier is not technological, but behavioural. We need to build a 'behavioural infra stack' on top of the digital one. Think about UPI. It's a technical masterpiece. Yet, millions of small merchants still ask customers to show the 'payment successful' screen. This isn't a sign of failure. It's a new, user-generated ritual created to replace the old sensory confirmation of receiving a physical note. It's a fallback norm that bridges the gap between the coldness of tech and the human need for trust. The startups that win from here will be masters of this behavioural layer. They will understand that their job is not just to provide a service, but to shape habits. This means using intelligent nudges to guide users towards better financial health. It means using vernacular explainers that use local metaphors to demystify complex products like insurance. It means designing new rituals that make digital interactions feel as safe and familiar as offline ones. Stop thinking only about your tech stack. Start thinking about your behavioural stack. Your biggest product challenge is no longer about APIs and uptime. It's about understanding the anxieties, aspirations, and deep-seated cultural norms of your user. The first wave of Digital India was an engineering problem. This next, more valuable wave is a human one. The real whitespace is in building the tools that give hundreds of millions of Indians the confidence to navigate this new digital world. What do you think? Do share below in the comments. 💡 Why global VC playbooks don’t always work in India Growth investing in India has reached critical mass, but as Ashish Kumar of The Fundamentum Partnership puts it—it needs local understanding. A business model that thrives in the US might fail spectacularly in India. Take marketplaces for example. In the US, successful companies (Amazon, eBay, Uber) typically don’t hold inventory—supply chains are reliable, and quality is assured. But in India? It’s a different game. With a fragmented, highly competitive, and price-sensitive market, quality isn’t guaranteed unless the company takes control. That’s why full-stack models like Flipkart and Spinny have worked. 🚗 Spinny—when Fundamentum invested, it wasn’t the first player in the used car market. But it stood out because it held inventory, refurbished cars, and ensured quality—going against the typical VC playbook. 💡 Most VCs questioned: "Why tie up capital in inventory?" But as Ashish says, in India, if you don’t solve for value first, the business model won’t even matter. This is why local context trumps global playbooks. Dot-com boom founders laid the foundation for India’s first wave of venture capital. In 2000, Suvir Sujan and Avnish Bajaj launched Bazee.com, which eBay later acquired for $50 million. Suvir went on to co-found Nexus Venture Partners, while Avnish started Matrix Partners India (now Z47). That same year, Shailendra Singh created Jalva Media before building Sequoia Capital India (now Peak XV). In 1998, Prashanth Prakash founded Netkraft. Aldea acquired the firm for $130 million, after which he co-founded Erasmic Ventures, the forerunner to Accel India. Are we going to see something similar today with the AI boom?

In venture capital, ultimately “only a handful of companies per year actually matter”. Just 7 firms led the Series A of ~60% of startups in India that are worth $1B+ today.
